Playa del Carmen to Chichen - Itza -- help please!
Is it possible to make a day trip to playa del carmen to chichen itza?
Also, does anyone know anything about the Posada Freud, Hotel La Tortuga or Riviera Caribe Maya?
Any general advice about the area would also be appreciated.

Hi,
Multiple options are available for day trips to Chichen Itza from Playa, but it won't be a short day, given the distances and/or road conditions involved, no matter how you do it.
La Tortuga is a hotel of about 40 rooms with a good reputation located a couple blocks off teh beach around 10th avernue and 14th street (sort of behind Mosquito Blue, diagonally).
Posada Freud is not as well known, located right on 5th Ave between 8th and 10th streets.
Riviera Caribe Maya may be the newest of the bunch, and has come on rather strong in reviews over the past year, perhaps, as a good combination of affordable and quality (although the same is generally said of La Tortuga, as far as that goes). It is north of Constituyentes again a couple of blocks off the beach.
The TripAdvisor site lists many reviews of each of these hotels.

There are many, many people offering excursions from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza. I would not recommend booking before you arrive in Mexico, as the Internet-listed options are limited and relatively expensive.
One approach is to rent a car and drive yourself - main advantage being that you can keep your own schedule and not be rushed. But it is a long drive, so you have to start EARLY. You really don't want to drive much after dark.
Your hotel can fix you up with a tour, and there are several booths in downtown Playa offering excursions - some of them pretty cheap. But find out what is included (admission to C.I.? Lunch?) and how long you will have at the site. The longer the better, in my opinion.
I would also recommend choosing a tour that includes a brief stop in Valladolid.

There are flight tours to Chichen Itza from PDC. I took one and it was a highlight of my trip. You fly out around 9 am and arrive at Chichen Itza by 10 am, before the hoards of tourists arrive around noon.
The tour includes a private guide of the ruins who was very knowledgeable. It is worth the price in my opinion. You can book it in a booth near the Cozumel ferry terminal.

I also recommend renting a car to go to Chichen Itza from PDC. It is about 3 hours. If you go on the tours you have to go at someone elses pace, something I can't do. The driving is easy. Start early morning. Also a drive to TULUM is worthwhile, only about 45 minutes from PDC. Have fun.
