Playa Del Carmen

Have never been to Mexico, but am considering a family vacation there in June. Looking for 4-5 star resort with good beach/swimming and snorkeling. Have read info on Iberostar, but there are several of them in that area. Have 11 year old boy who loves the ocean. Any suggestions and info greatly appreciated.

The Iberostars are all great resorts.
The one with the calmest ocean would be the IB Tucan/Quetzal. It's also closer to Playa del Carmen. It depends on when you are goin and if you like to eat at ala carte restaurants or buffets. At the Tucan/Quetzal you get three ala cartes guaranteed for a seven night stay.
The IB Paraiso complex is much bigger and has five hotels. The Del Mar/Beach are similar to the Tucan/Quetzal and also only guarantee three ala cartes for a seven night stay. The buffets at all the hotels I've mentioned so far are not air conditioned, so I don't know if I'd want to be there in the summer.
I was at the Del Mar in December and it was WONDERFUL. Also at the IB Paraiso complex is the Lindo/Maya side. There you can eat ala carte every night of your stay and the bffets are air conditioned. They also have a wave pool and lazy rive.
For great info on the Iberostars, go to: http://www.iberostar-board.com/boards/index.php

Thanks for the great info. We plan to go early June, so airconditioning sounds good. We wil only be there 5-6 nights so everynight ala carte at the Paraiso Lindo/Maya sounds good too. How rough is the water at that location? Thanks.

The water conditions vary depending on the weather. When we were there we were in the ocean every day. There were usually yeallow flags on the beach. One day it was so calm we could have been on little rafts all day.
If you are going to the IB Pariaso Lindo or Maya...the Lindo usually costs less and they share all facilities except for the Maya gourmet restaurant (the Lindo has it's own gourmet restaurant) and the Maya Japanese restaurant (you can use the one at the Beach). The Lindo is the best value if you want the nightly ala cartes or air conditioned buffet.

They also have a Commercial Center which is available to the entire IB Paraiso complex. It has some shops and more places for food...hamburger place, taco place, ice cream and crepes place, tapas place. They also have an under 18 and an adult disco there. Your son might be interested in the early evening there for the younger children. Not sure if they take anyone under twelve though.
