Montevideo Hotel
Which 4 star hotel do your recommend? We only have one night, and we will have spent the previous night on a plane, we are looking for a 4 star hotel that is walking distance to the sights, waterfront and restaurants.

My favorite really nice hotel in Montevideo is called Cala di Volpe. It's right along the water, has a good restaurant on premise, as well as being close to several other quite good restaurants, shopping district, etc. They have a website at http://www.hotelcaladivolpe.com.uy/ - I've stayed there twice on visits and been much happier there than at other spots I've tried.

Isn't the hotel Saltshaker mentions fairly far from the sights? I'm looking for some hotel advice too. I want to be in an intersting area and able to walk day and night. It sounds like many better hotels are in residential areas. How far are they from the old city, etc.?

Well, the problem is, the "sights" are scattered around the city. This place is along the main boardwalk, the beach is right there, plenty of restaurants, and much of the shopping. And you're not far from the city center. The old city is not that far away, but you're not going to find a four star hotel there, nor are you going to find one near to the port/market area. If you're willing to settle for a local, probably 1-2 star hotel, you can stay in those areas... Most of the better hotels are along the waterfront.
Keep in mind that Montevideo's just not that big geographically, and while you might not want to walk everywhere, it's a quick cab ride around to the various areas of sightseeing interest.
