The RIU Cancun actually IS a brand new hotel. It's right next to the Fiesta Americana Coral Beach---there was nothing there before. It's a huge 15 story building. The RIU website (www.riu.com) says the opening is May 16, 2003, but I'm not sure if it has really opened yet or not. Their website has a few pictures of the resort, but nothing that will really give you a clear picture of it. I have a picture (that someone from another board took) of the RIU under construction that I can e-mail you if you'd like. Also, if you go to the Sunquest website (it's a Canadian tour operator I use) they have an artist's rendition of the completed hotel

I just spoke with a travel agent who informed me it is brand new. I am also curious of location. Is this a good location? They have an excellent promo price, for June 26. for 7 days. It is AI and looks very nice from the limited pictures on the web. There on web riu.com says it opens in mid June.

I was in Cancun early last month and was looking for the new RIU. They are building something next to Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, but I thought it was a condo, and no signs were posted In any event, it didn't look like it was anywhere near completion to me. If this is it, looks like it will be a beautiful place.

The hotel is new and it is up and running. Depends where you are coming from but Apple Vacations is running a special from the Balitmore area for 799pp for the 7nights hotel and air all inclusive. They will probably have good deals from many other cities also. The prices you will get now will probably be the best you will ever see. New resorts always have grand opening specials for the first several months they are open and then the prices only go up from there.

just returned from the new Riu. this resort is beautiful the lobby is breathtaking. They have two buffets one air-conditioned and one open air by the beach. you have to make reservations for one resturant only.It is brazilion resturant several different meats served . They have chairs in the water and at the swim-up bar tables and chairs. the drinks are pretty good the best drinks are at the lobby bar and the bar in the lounge which opens up in the evening...They have a quiet pool on the far end of the resort on the side. however they are in the process of building a new resort beside of it so the people at the quiet pool and the rooms that face that area see that construcion going on but was not a problem. the food was pretty good at all the resturants you could find something for everyone.. they have a mini bar and liquer dispenser in every room.. No coffee pot or iron in the rooms but coffee was found in the lobby every morning. the beach was also pretty good . the water was so clear and the waves were not to high at all. This resort is prefect for walking to things there is a mall right across the street and down just a bit is a huge Mexican out-let store and down a little further is the flea market. and rainforest cafe and hard rock cafe. so everything is within a 10 to 15 minute walk no need for taxis. They also have a hot tub and chairs on the roof (6th floor)in the solarium in the main building. I am definitly going to return to this resort one day...

Thanks so much for the trip report. This was the week I had been interested in going in fact was ready to go when my husband but the cabash to the idea. I have been checking the weather and I must say it was more than likely for the best. They are having downpours so it would seem. I am glad you had a good time. Sounds like it would be worth the trip sometime.
