Anbody been to Uruguay

Has anyone been to Uruguay. I heard it can make a nice honeymoon spot. Looking for a nice beach resort.

I have been to Uruguay a few times. I like it, but it may not be for everyone.
It is very different from other Latin AMerican countries
Lots of Italian influence in the food (yummy!), great steaks, etc
The beaches are pretty, but not what I consider "user friendly"--the water is VERY cold -- Punta del Este is the most common beach spot--pretty, but not "tropical" (although it gets VERY hot)

Also, it can be a long trip to get there
here is a website to learn a little more if you want:

it is in Spanish but you can see some great pictures

feel free to ask any specific questions

enjoy wherever you decide to go!

You may want to consider Argentina. In my opinion it has much more to offer.

From Buenos Aires you can take a ferry to Montevideo for the day or a couple of days. I much prefer Argentina.

I have been to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Of the three, Uruguay was the least interesting. At Punte del Este, you'll find pine trees, not palm trees. Argentina offers more varied experiences; Brazil offers the tropical experience.

I visited Uruguay about 2 years ago at Christmas. I agree with plmrod that it's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it. I stayed in a little beach town called La Pedrera (near La Paloma), a couple of hours up the coast from Montevideo. It certainly wasn't a resort, and it's probably not what you were looking for. It was a laid-back, dusty little town. Mainly a place to relax. The beach was nice. I thought the water was relatively warm. We went for a swim at 7 am on Christmas morning, and it was wonderful.

Also spent a couple of days in Montevideo. That was OK. Nothing special.

Good luck

Yes, the water up the coast is warmer, however in Punta del Este I think it is cold--but I am originally from Florida and prefer FL and Caribbean beaches.....

I just got back from a two week motorcycle trip all (and I mean all over) Uruguay. Took the Ferry over to Colonia from BA, then picked up bikes in Montevideo. Went up to Punte del Este. Way too tourst-y for my likes. Go farther up the coast. Cheaper, cleaner beaches... the Reviera wine country was great. They west to Artigas, into Brazil. The Brazilans didn't hassel us there, remember that Gringos have to pay $US100 for a visa. We didn't. If you are venturing to Uraguay, remember, they see sooo few Gringos there, that once you get away from Colonia - Punte del Este, there is little call for tourist infurstructure. And have a very good command of Espanol. And the further north ya get, it's really a combo of Portegueee and Spanish. Have them speak slow. Anyway, if you want a more European experiance, go to Argentina, if you want a South American experiance, go to Uruguay. And don't forget, Even the Vegietarians eat beef in South America, Keep up with the fiber.
