First trip to Argentina - should we just stay in Buenos Aires?

I really need advice for our trip to Argentina in October.

My husband will be at a conference in Buenos Aires October 5 to 6. We arrive on the 3rd. I booked the flights right away in order to use my Aeroplan miles, and we thought it would be good idea to add a visit to Chile to the trip, so on October 12 we fly from BA to Santiago, then fly to Toronto on October 20. So my first mistake was booking the flights before doing any real research on the destinations, because now that I've started researching Argentina I realize that there is so much to see that it would have been better to just stick to one country as we really don't have enough time to do much.

If we leave BA the evening of October 6, would we have enough time to fly to Iguazu Falls and also visit Salta and the Northwest? Because of our flights we would have to return to BA by October 11 at the latest. Or should we forget about Salta and just do a 2 night trip to Iguazu and spend the rest of the time in Buenos Aires? If so, any recommendations for a well-located, reasonably priced hotel in the Ricoleta area?

Any good day trips from BA instead?

My husband would also appreciate recommendations for the best tango shows to attend.

Thanks for your help.

I fear you did make a mistake, on country would have been better! Salta and the NW really is one of the highlights of Argentina and really needs at least six days, preferably more. I suppose you could get a flavour in less time, maybe covering Cafayate and Cachi but I am afraid you just don't have enough time to do it justice.

Iguazu is one of the natural wonders of the world and needs two nights, one day for the Argentine side and one for the Brazilian falls.

There is plenty to see and do in BA but if you do want to add a side trip, consider Colonia del Sacremento across th river in Uruguay or the Tigre delta.

As for Tango shows, the first time we really enjoyed Cafe Tortoni one of the oldest caf s in BA, the atmosphere, the music and the dance were all great. We returned last year and weren't quiet so impressed.

Agree with crellston. Definitely visit Iguazu! For my South America trip that included BsAs and a bit of Uruguay, click on my name.

Iguazu, yes, do. And from BsAs, the ferry to Colonia del Sacremento in UY makes for a nice day trip (in good weather) as does a day or overnight in an Estancia in the pampas - to include a visit to San Antonio de Areco. this is quintessentially Argentina.

Cafe Tortoni is a good place to visit - w/or w/out the Tango show. My favorite Tango Show is La Ventana. The dinners are only so-so at just about all of the shows.

Don't fret too much about your planning...you would not have had time for the Northwest or Patagonia anyway - so, just enjoy your trip and accept the idea that you will need to return

Thanks for your responses..I guess we'll save Salta and the Northwest for another trip.
