There are two airlines. Sansa and Nature Air. I have flown mostly with Nature Air recently but did quite a bit with Sansa earlier on. Nature Air has more options for the places I want to go. Flying on those airlines is an experience. Depending on the size of the plane you can be 1 of 4 or 6 on up to 20 something if my memory is correct about the size of the Sansa planes on the larger flights. You will need to keep your luggage light as there is a 25lb limit. Sometimes they just charge you a little extra if you are overweight, sometimes they don't do anything, and sometimes they put your luggage on another flight. I have had all of the above happen. For me it is easier to just travel light.
I have flown from coast to coast and from the Nicaraguan border down to close to the Panama border. I hate every second of it but they seem to have a pretty good track record. There have been crashes and accidents just like anywhere else in the world but from what I hear there aren't many. You can do a search on the Tico times and pull up reports of crashes or accidents. I haven't heard of any in quite a long time.

Hi Karl:
The bus ride from San Jose to Tamarindo is about 5 hrs through Fantasy Bus or InterBus. It's a comfortable trip with a brief stop to stretch your legs at the Corobeci Restaurant. You can check their schedules at - http://www.interbusonline.com/

Have Fun
