Zurich Hotel Needed
We are headed back to Wengen in September. We would like your suggestions about where to stay in Zurich on the night before our flight back.
Our last couple of trips we wound up spending the night in hotels near the airport. Essentially no nearby sight seeing available and we were tied to the mediocre hotel restaurant. This time, we'd like to stay in the city with access to some sight seeing but also with shuttle transportation to the airport for an early morning flight back.
Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you.

I agree with you, it is worth staying in downtown Zurich so you can enjoy your last evening. One hotel that has an early morning airport shuttle is the Marriot which has a decent acces to the old town though not exactly the perfect swiss hotel. The downside of airport shuttles from the hotels in downtown charge a lot more per person than the price of the airport train ticket. I remember we ended paying 35 francs for two people(one way) which is close to the taxi fare. You can easily walk from the Marriott to the train station to get on the cheap train to the airport.

Hi Wengenlover (I love Wengen too!)
We've done it both ways - stayed in town and stayed by the airport. Both have their good and bad points.
I think I might have found a good compromise (at least for us).
I just booked a room at the Zurich Radisson SAS. It's a new hotel located directly across the street from the airport.
The selling points for me were that it offers easy access to the train should we want to go into town, easy access to the airport should we want to eat or shop in the AP, and of course super easy access to the AP for departure.
We also don't have to deal with dragging our luggage, as we'll arrive at the airport train station from Lauterbrunnen and just walk across (or under) the street.
They also have really good weekend rates (half price).

We have stayed at the Marriott and did not like it too much, mainly because it is not located in the Old Town.
The Marriott's shuttle is considerable more expensive than a taxi and runs every 30 minutes or so, thus a shuttle should not be a factor of decision. In any case, a taxi is faster and cheaper and any hotel in Zürich will order a taxi for you. (Most hotels have a taxi stand at their front entrance anyway.)
Zürich's Old Town is very charming and a nightly stroll is a rewarding experience. Better take a hotel which is located right in downtown.
You may try the Florhof.

I stayed at the Park Inn Zurich Airport the night before my flight out from Zurich airport.

Do a search on Park Inn Zurich if the link above doesn't work.
I had a good experience -- very modern rooms (open your window shades with the touch of a button), nice comfortable beds, wonderful shower & bathroom, very clean. I didn't have time to have breakfast at the restaurant. Staff was very professional, friendly, and helpful. Free shuttle to the airport.
Check tripadvisor.com for other reviews.

Hi Wengenlover,
Sorry no personal recommendations for a hotel (I tend to stay in the suburb of Kuesnacht).
But I wonder why you are thinking of an expensive shuttle or an expensive taxi? You probably know that there are frequent trains to the airport from the main station downtown, and it costs around 5 chf. It's incredibly easy -- so yes just pick a hotel near the train station, and you'll be set.

We stayed at the Hotel Adler the night before flying home and really loved it. Some rooms were very noisy overnight but we all agreed we liked the hotel enough that we'd stay there again - get a room that is not courtside, and take earplugs!

Hi WL,
From my trip report:
Zurich: Hotel St. Josef (http://www.st-josef.ch/)
Based on a review I had read, we asked for room 414. We were very pleased with this large corner room on the 1st floor. The hotel is modern, with relatively spare furnishings. Friendly, helpful staff; spotlessly clean, good bkfst, good restaurant (My Lady Wife rated it one of the best of our stay) and central location not far from the Hauptbahnhof and the Old Town. 190 CHF/nite w/bkfst.
You can easily get from the train station to the airport on the Sbahn.

We did the same thing and chose to stay out by the airport. It took a lot of pressure off knowing we didn't have to lug our luggage, even though we were doing carry on only, on the train out to the airport. At the end of the trip, it was nice knowing the hotel's shuttle bus driver would take care of getting us and our luggage to the airport. Be sure to ask if you need to make reservations for the shuttle bus. We did have to.
We stayed at the Park Inn. It was very nice and a good value.
