Zermatt hotel help

We're planning to stay two nights in Zermatt in May and hope someone can give us some critique on hotels. We don't want to find a "splurge" place, but we do want a pleasant, comfortable place that is tourist friendly. Does anyone have comments on either Hotel Ambiance or Hotel Excelsior? Or can you recommend a moderate priced hotel that you were happy with?

Thanks.

Im sure you'll get lots of recommendations.

I've only stayed in two different Zermatt hotels; both were Best Western affiliated and what I would consider "moderate" in price. Of those two, I would recommend the Hotel Butterfly; I found the staff, especially the manager to be very friendly and helpful. As in most Swiss hotels the rooms were in excellent shape and housekeeping was immaculate. Rooms were not all that fancy..kinda rustic actually. Within easy walking distance of the train station. Food in the restaurant was adequate.

Our favorite place to stay in Zermatt is Casa Vanessa II - it's an apartment/hotel - the units have kitchen facilities and a living room in addition to the bedroom and bath. It's spotless and very comfortable.

During the off season (such as May) you can stay there at a huge savings because the hotel service (cleaning and breakfast) isn't offered.

During May, the room we like rents for 100 CHF, compared to the high season when the same room rents for 195-210 CHF per night, the only difference is no daily cleaning/breakfast.

If you'd prefer a hotel with service and breakfast, we've stayed at Hotel Style Biner, although we haven't stayed there since their remodel.

Hi,
We also stayed at the Hotel Butterfly a few years back and would recommend it.

We stayed at the Mount Cerven(sp??) on a tour and then when we were on our own another time at the butterfly. This was 10 yrs ago but it was small, clean and good location. I would stay there again.
Would consider it in the modest category pricewise. Love Zermatt!!!

The Mont Cervin Palace will probably be a lot more expensive than a place like the Butterfly but you can see it and all the other Seiler places at www.seilerhotels.com
