we stayed at Dean Court years and years ago and it was quite nice but not Middlethorpe Hall or any other country house like hotel. But if you are determined to stay right in York it is a wonderful choice. The church bells may knock you right out of your bed though if you happen to be resting or sleeping when they sound forth!

Further out ,about an hours drive, we love the Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey, Skipton. It is owned by the Duchess of devonshire, beautifully furnished, wonderful restaurant, interesting area, and also any and all facilities thatyou could desire. But a car will be necessary. I love country house hotels, coming bacjk after a long day , resting, ordering a drink while scanning the menu and ordering then being called to your table when ready, then coffee with other guests and a chance to chat and compare notes with other people. Email me if you want more info

I highly recommend the Four Seasons Hotel in York. It is a small B&B outside the walls of York within a very flat, short walking distance to York Minster. The owners were the nicest we have ever met and the rooms were lovely. Wonderful breakfast and very quiet. The B&B is on a side street across from an exclusive private boarding school. Very nice, quiet and pretty. Oh yes, it is a four star hotel. Good luck.
I second Kitty's opinion. Our family stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel in June and it was wonderful. The lounge and outdoor seating area were great places to relax after touring and our room was beautiful. Check out their web page at http://www.fourseasons-hotel.co.uk/mainpage.html.
