You need to get it into your head that Britons (whether jew, parsee or hindu etc) are lazy sods and really don't want to do anything other than indulge in our national passtime - getting pissed.
It's what made Britain great - laziness and alcoholism.

Bob, I think the Beeching cuts have been regarded as something of a mistake in recent times. Some of the infrastructure remains in place (admittedly, not much), but in a few isolated areas, there has been consideration given to re-opening some lines.
For example, if Stansted airport were to expand drastically, the rail line running east from Bishops Stortford (closest large town to airport) might we reopened in some guise.

As a rail buff who loves riding the sweet and terrible quaint UK sidelines i'd love to keep them trundling along to nowhere
but here's what John Armitt, ex chairman of Network Rail said in 2006:
-rural train services should be replaced by buses and taxis and the money saved invested in busy commuter and inter-city routes. - that running mostly rmpty trains was a waste of money and environmentally unfriendly
he points to redirecting the money to trebling servies on Thameslin London (former name) franchise - now First Capital Connect.
so if profits are key to running trains like on Christas it seems the same flanneur philosophy would dictate slicing lines like the Cotswold one which seemingly would fit Arnitt's description of such wasteful lines.

We Brits are not stranded on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as many people seem to assume. People travelling for Christmas have already arrived (and not ready to leave), plenty of taxis are available and we have things on the end of our legs called feet which most of us are happy to use for short distances! It seems to upset a lot of people that our pubs are open - we like it that way, there is a demand for them, and we manage to get there without too much difficulty (and back again on occasion).

BUT why? It would only take you to Harwich which would only benefit cruise passengers
Much better would be to improve the line from Peterborough to Stansted so that folk from the north can use Stansted - as it's stands it's as quick to go to Gatwick if coming from north of Peterborough

Who knows Alan, but that was one of the proposals (dependant on how many new runways open - the current limited expansion plans for one would not necessitate it).
This is quite a densely populated area of the country, with fairly limited rail links in some regions, and some poor roads despite the population count (still can't get from Stansted to Colchester or Harwich without using non-dual carriageway part of the way).

Bob, the bus service in this area is absolutely terrible. With the exception of the airport service, they stop around 6:00pm. I kid you not. The only people using them are grannies doing their shopping - they are useless for commuters.
