Which airport should we use?
We are plannninga trip to Venice, Florence and Rome. Which airport (Rome or Florence?) should we fly in and out of? Between cities we will travel by train (hopefully high speed).

Where are you flying from? If you want to fly non-stop from US mainland, then it'll be Rome. If you are connecting through London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris or Munich, then you can take your pick - perhaps fly into Venice then out of Rome so you need not backtrack.
Flying back to US (w. connection) out of Venice means an early morning flight, and there is a lot of discussion on this forum of how to get to Venice airport so early. (search Venice flights).

There are non-stop flights to/from VCE in both NYC and PHL (new this year).
I am a proponent of the seemingly illogical plan to start in Florence. This means that you have to fly via LON or PAR or FRA or some place. I think that Venice is "too special" to go to first - - those first 24 hours, you're going to b adjusting to the time zone change, the sleep-deprived flight, the language and a whole lot more. Time in Venice is always expensive, and you always want more, so I say don't give it that first day when you're still in a bit of a blur.
And Rome is so intense that I have seen people spend their first day or two rather unhappy and overwhelmed, from fatigue and sensory overload.
So, Florence is a better match, IMO.
If you can't get a flight you like directly into Florence, then consider Milan Linate (via FRA, or example). It's easy and cheap to take the bus from LIN to Milano Centrale, and then you can have a nice nap on the ML-FLR train (about 2 hr 45 min).
Alot depends on how budget conscious you are, versus how much you are planning to sueeze too uch into too little time (most first-time Italy travelers do this!)
Best wishes,
Rex

Oh, and now I see that you have posted this same question twice, presumably because you couldn't find your initial post here, and you wondered if it had any answers or just disappeared. It's one sign that you're new here, but that can be most readily determined by "click on your own name" - - a valuable tip that Fodors fails to tell you when they send you that initial e-mail confirming your registration here.
Perhaps you would be willing to take a look at http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34598057 and follow my advice to e-mail THAT thread to [email protected]
