We are going to Spain in May and our 3 middle days are "free". I was wondering about Granada, but it appears that it is hard to drive into without a hotel reservation. Does anyone have suggestions about where to stay around the city? and if so, how to get into the town to see the Alhumbra?

IMO, driving is not that bad except in the very center of the city [the Alhambra is on a hill very near the center]. Downtown is indeed tough. My recollection is that there are several hotels on Avenida de la Constitution not far from the train station. There is good bus service from there into town. 10-15 minutes. The same is true for Camino de Ronda. Either of these locations would let you avoid the center city problem but still put you close to downtown.

otel.com...anyway it was across the street from The Alhambra
I mean literally across the street.
Plus I was really pleasantly surprised with the hotel, the rooms, had a little restaurant and bar downstairs...but the view was incredible. I asked to be in the back..I hadn't know they had balconies in the back...and you can see forever and over the gardens and so on...

So here in the info in case you are interested...you should also google the info, but as I say, even though I google and look over everything...I thought it was the second best hotel I had stayed in for location, nice room etc next to the
Argantonio in Cadiz which was also wonderful.

P.S. if you are going to the Alhambra you need to buy the tickets online - and really really be there when the ticket
says, otherwise they wont let you in. Also the thing is so massive, that it would be a good idea to buy a ticket for morning and one for evening (on 2 or more different days)

It's not just a building but gardens and gardens and streets etc etc

I also stayed at Hotel Guadalupe a few years ago and thought it was great -- nothing fancy, but okay in a perfect location. We drove up the hill, planted the car, and after checking in took the shuttle bus into town to look around. The best part was waking up the next day to a fine breakfast and just stepping across the street for our tour of the Alhambra, which we booked as early as possible so that we could experience it with few crowds. (By 10:00 a.m. it was becoming packed with tourists, and this was in February.)

I guess you just need to decide if you want to be steps from the town of Granada or steps from the Alhambra. Either way, the shuttle bus between the two seems to work fine.

I booked it thru booking.com I guess because I had checked prices. It gets a rating of 8.2 and is listed as a 3 star hotel but I found it vey reasonable.

I just drive into town, put the car in any parking garage and take a cab to the hotel. I have enjoyed Hotel Puerta de las Granadas.

You can drive up the the Hotel Guadalupe. Just follow the signs to the Parador and the Alhambra and forget about driving into the city. There is parking close by.

According to my experience, driving through central Granada is a nightmare.
