What to do with your camera if your not carrying a purse?

Hola!

My husband and I will be traveling to Spain in September. I've been reading the posts on pickpocketing, so I want to be extra careful. When we travel, I usually carry my camera in a small back nylon purse. However, I don't want to carry a purse especially in Barcelona and Madrid. What does everyone do with their camera so they don't look like a tourist? I refuse to hang it around my neck.

Thank you!

Is this a digital? Why can't you slip it in a pocket?

It's not small enough to fit in a pocket.

I carry a purse. I do not put anything I cannot live without in the purse. I stay aware. I can live without the camera, but if it is not in a bag of some sort it will inevitably be lost. You will look like a tourist regardless.

My camera is too large to fit in my pocket, so I carry it around my neck. Since I am a tourist, I really don't care that I look like one. It's how you act that counts.

Assuming you are going to use the camera, there is no way to avoid looking like a tourist.

I just carry my regular purse, same as at home which is big enough to hold a camera.

I wear vests with deep pockets that have zippers, and my rather large digital fits into them, as well as everything else I need. Over the years, I've bought these vests at places like REI, Northface, and Smith & Hawken. Haven't carried a purse in years.

If it's small enough, neckstrap or wriststrap.

I carry it around my neck and hold it in one hand. I am a tourist! I don't care if I look like one. I usually carry a soft sided small kind of messenger bag type thing (very small for a messenger bag) that fits the camera and an extra lens and what ever else I need. I goes across my chest. But I have to admit the camera is hardly ever in it...I take too many photos!

I carry the same purse when I'm traveling as I do for everything else. I usually have my camera in my hand with a wriststrap. Never take the wrist strap off, that way if I slip, the camera doesn't crash to the ground.

I'm a purse carrier, too. Don't change my habits when I'm traveling. And the only place I've ever been the target of crime was right here in the DC area.

I hang it from my neck when I'm using it and put it in my purse the rest of the time.

If your don;t have a purse - or equivalent - where will you carry anything (guidebook, water bottle, umbrella- never mind wallet, tissues, comb, maek-up, jacket, etc)?

I use a case that loops onto my belt or a vest as described by Nancy1652. Carrying a camera does not necessarily label you as a tourist. I often carry a camera around in my own town-if others think I'm a tourist, they are wrong. I assume others do the same.

Besides, there are so many other things that give me away as a tourist when I travel even though I wear neither white tennis shoes nor a baseball cap.

I give it to my husband to hold, of course!!
seriouosly his pockest are larger than mine and it fits! I hate carrying a purse while travelling - it hurts my shoulder/back if I walk with it all day. (In winter, I put it in a coat pocket with no problem) I have now found the perfect solution though....we make my 6 yr old bring his little Power Rangers backpack ! it's the perfect size to fit camera, guide book and water...and no one looks at my husband funny for carrying it for him (aww...poor tired little child).

If I don't slip the camera into my travel bag/purse, then I wear the small case for it, but with the strap elongated to go diagonally across the chest. I don't like anything hanging on my neck and I don't like anything dangling off my shoulder. (ever).

One other option is to buy a compact camera bag that has a belt clip, instead of hanging it around your neck. I think they look a little better than bags with neck straps. In reality though, unless the camera is totally hidden in a bag etc, its a bit hard to not look like a tourist.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I especially liked CasaDelCipresso response Although, we don't have a child so that won't work.

Looks like I will probably just bring the small purse. It looks more like a messenger type bag, so maybe my husband and I will switch off wearing it.

Thanks!

Make a small purchase, and request a plastic carrier bag. Use the bag to carry camera, and any other small items.
