what area in Prague would you stay
I think I can figure out which hotel to choose from if I knew which was the best location to stay in. I would like to stay in a hotel most centrally located to most of the sights that most tourists visit. Thanks for any advice

I vote for the Old Town area, too, for all the reasons cited above. I will be there at the end of August, staying quite near the Charles Bridge at Hotel U Zlatne Study (not to be confused with the hotel of the exact same name in Mala Strana). http://www.uzlatestudny.cz/ The other time I was in Prague in '03 I stayed near Wenceslas Square and found I spent a lot of time walking elsewhere...there are sites around there but as you can tell from all the other posts, the action is in Old Town plus the Castle.

I like both the Old Town and Mala Strana.
I've only stayed in Old Town but next time I might try the "other side" and stay in Mala Strana. Either one is nice, so long as you are reasonably close to the Charles Bridge. As Jean said, the main tourist area of Prague is quite small, and it is a short walk from Old Town (on one side of the bridge) to Mala Strana (on the other). Old Town has a bit more going on while Mala Strana is quieter but I think they are both nice and convenient for a tourist.

I like the Josefov area, which is just north of Old Town, but your question doesn't have one answer because everything a tourist might want to see is split between these areas -- Mala Strana and the castle area on the west of the river, and centering around Old Town (and Josefov and some parts of New Town) on the east side. So there isn't just one place to choose.

I just left Prague and I stayed in the Little Town budget hotel. Its just perfect place to stay. I reccommend it to everybody. All the main places are in walking distance, you walk out of the doors and see the best view of Prague Castle. Charles bridge is 2 minutes walk. The rooms are very clean, newly reconstructed, with kitchen, wifi, laundry. And the receptionist - nice and smily all the time. I just felt like home. I was 3rd time in Prague and I truly can say that this place was the best. I am not sure if I can write their web pages here but I try - www.littletownhotel.com
