I think you mentioned it above, but the emotional aspect would ruin an otherwise good "hotel room algorithim" every time. There's nothing like emotion to mess up logic...
One of my factors is a comfortable bed. The bummer is that many times you may not know that before you get there. I wish more people would rate their bed in their hotel reviews.
One reason why this is a priority to me stems from a hotel in Italy where our double bed was 2 twins pushed together. I ended up sleeping in "the pit" every night as the beds would start to slip apart and I'd fall between the mattresses.
Maybe the execution of the 2 beds (or mattresses) together was just done wrong, but there's nothing worse than a bad night's sleep- especially on vacation.

jbee, that's a wonderful description of the twin beds pushed together -- "sleeping in the pit." The same thing happened to me and my husband a couple of years ago in a small town in France. And no, Travelnut, unfortunately, it wasn't possible just to scoot over a little 
The beds were determined to move apart, and no matter where I was, I fell between the mattresses. Hadn't thought of it again, but now it will be one of my funny memories.

..When I am in a major city being a tourist, I want location, quiet, a working bathroom, and clean (my definition is no nasty smells or stains . I spend almost no time in my room. If I am on business, a differnt story as I will work in my room. Yes, someone else is picking up the tab.I can honestly say that my only concern at times when I am working is that it is hotel over location. Travel agents dont seem to understand that as a female I want to be in an area where I can take a quick walk without thinking twice as this is often my only form of exercise while I am on the road. If I am in a resort, I will make sure I am at an excellent hotel with all the bells and whistles as the restaurants, the pool ect are in line with the room rate...so 2* as a European tourist 5* for resort travel to entirely tourist focused destinations.

We always ask for twin rooms - but we don't try to sleep in the middle of the twins. We just each sleep on our own bed, no fightin' over the covers! But of course, twins won't work for "spooners"...
Now some hotels use twin beds but make them up as if they were one bed (like a king). That might be a bit trickier, but we haven't had any sinking experiences...

Alas, no, Elaine, I don't think scales of 1 to 10 for this or that work very well, for several reasons:
First, given that there is no universal bed comfort-o-meter scale, for example, how could we really compare the evaluations sent in by different people? My soft mattress is someone else's just right, for example.
Also trips aren't, thank heaven, controlled environments or laboratories; one day goes well, the next we're disappointed, and this is bound to affect our perception of reality unless we're really skilled and practiced at being objective observers. If I'm the victim of a burglary at a hotel, I'm going to notice every bump in the mattress for every night succeeding the burglary. Whereas if I'm having a great time, I'll sleep like a baby on just about anything, and everything looks at least somewhat more rose-coloured, even the nondescript mismatched beige tiles in the bathroom.

I have to agree with maryfalin, though. It remains one of my fondest memories and still makes me giggle. Of course, the room was only 90 euro/night high season in Venice, so if that was my biggest complaint, that's okay!
