Few tourists. Pleasant climate, basically it's one of the two most ideal periods to visit (the other is just before July, although even this year it's been cloud and rain).

Few tourists?
Sep and Oct are peak season for historical cities in Italy - more than in July/August. Plus return of business, cultural and academic travellers, you may find hotels more booked up than in high summer.
As for weather, the last couple of years has been very mixed in Italy, though normally you can still expect bright sunny days and temperatures in the upper 70s/lower 80s (25-30C).

Hi MBob,
I've been to Italy, specially Florence the past few years both at the beginning and end of September through mid-October and was always fortunate to have wonderful weather just like Alec mentioned above. It's the best time to visit Europe IMO.
Happy travels,
jdc

Only Mother Nature Knows for sure..
Lately, the weather has been so unpredictable in Italy..I dont know how many of you are aware about the Maltempo (Bad weather) that Italy from North to the South is experiencing in these days?

I was in Florence last Sept (24-28) and it was still QUITE crowded with tourists, but the weather was nice. Sort of on the border between needing a light jacket and not needing one. Maybe upper 60s and into the 70s during the day and then quite a bit cooler at night.
