We spend 2 weeks in Italy last September and the weather was very nice in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Positano. The sea was still very warm and the only really hot day was at Pompei. Otherwise, the temperatures were very comfortable and we did not encounter any rain.

What is the definition of "nice"? 85 F will be nicer than 65 to some, too hot for others. One third of September is in the autumn; two thirds in summer. Do you want nice "summer" weather"? or nice autumn weather?

At the risk of stating the obvious, northern destinations, and those at higher elevations will be cooler. South will be warmer. Coastal areas wil have more a moderate climate than the "extremes" found just 20-30 miles inland.

For factual data, see www.weatherbase.com or www.worldclimate.com

Best wishes,

Rex

Rex is absolutely correct. Without knowing your climatic preferences, it is difficult to say what is "nice." But you can be that basically in September, all of Italy is pleasant, with the possible exception that Sicily and the southern part of the boot will still be pretty warm. September is my favorite month in Italy, especially toward the end of the month. Good luck.

I hope you know it varies greatly by location. You can find this yourself at the various weather sites, but here goes one more time:

Rome--79&62
Florence--81&58
Venice--74&59
Bolzano--71&55

Hard to beat !

You can also get info about average temperatures from www.weather.com.

In my experience, September in Italy is perfect, but that is a personal preference. It is warm--definately over 70F and potentially up above 80F. It should be fairly sunny over most of Italy, although there can be a little rain at that time of year.

As mentioned above, it is hard to recommend locations without knowing what you find nice.

MMR41- what Italian restaurant (in London) would you suggest? My first
real chuckle of day! A somber day?

One of my cousins told me that September is the ideal time in Sicily. I think September weather would be "nice" any place in Italy, except when it isn't.

Sept weather in Italy?
Lovely.

I've had hot temps (80F)in Rome into the beginning of October. In Venice I've had cool mornings, afternoons in the low 70s. No rain in Rome while I've been there, but occasional drizzle in Venice.

Bring a sweater and an umbrella and perhaps a very light weight rain coat or jacket--you'll literally be covered.

My 2 recent experiences of Italian weather have made me vow never to return in September again!

In 2002 we travelled through Italy from Sept 5th for 2 weeks - from Rome eventually up to Santa Margherita on the Ligurian coast - the last 5 days we got fiarly miserable weather and lots of heavy rain.

On September 5th this year we travelled to Sicily - weather was mostly hot for the first 9 days with 1 day of torrential rain. However the last 5 days were grey and miserable with the heaviest rain, thinder and lightening I've seen in a long time. they had great sales of umbrellas and rain coats. You can be lucky but be prepared for rain if you choose any time after September week one.

Other than that we had a lovely time!

Tough luck for Emer. Actually, Oct. and Nov. have more rain on average.

We were in Italy Sept. 6-21 of this year. Only rained once the entire time. Cinque Terre was HOT. Rome was pretty hot. Florence and Venice were okay...low 80's. I noticed that the temps in Rome dropped to the 70's a few days after we got back. It was in the high 80's while we were there. As a previous poster said, the later in the fall, the more likely you will get rain. I asked our Florence tour guide what he thought was the perfect time of the year to visit Italy and he said May. For me to say it is hot is a big deal...I live in Florida.

Northern Italy can be very rainy in September, especially later in month. Was there once for ten days and it rained every day! The Po was overflowing its banks.
