Visiting Lisbon, Portugal for 2 days and need advice about getting around...
We will be in Lisbon in March from a cruise port stop for 2 days. Should I purchase a Lisbon card (18 euros) or just a transportation card? We are both over 65 , and have seen that many of the museums give 50% off for seniors. Another question- Do you have to be an EU resident to get senior reduction rates? We are American. I’m trying to figure which way is more economical. Thanks.

Hi,
It all depends, has you said if you want to visit some museum and historical sites the Lisboa Card is a good option otherwise the transport card is better. For example, for Jeronimos Monastery, a must see in Lisbon, without the card you pay 10 euros, with the card you pay nothing.Only for this the Lisboa card pays off.
The person over 65 have 50% discounts, you have to show your ID, i think it's only for EU members.
You got the Viva Viagem 24 hour card option, valid for metro/bus transports. You can buy it at any metro station (one close to the cruise terminal) or in Santa Apolonia Train station (also close to the cruise terminal). You need to buy two, one for each day ,and it starts counting when you 1st validate the card in your 1st trip, it's a very good option.
Metro/Carris 24 hour ticket 6.40 Euros

I recently hosted senior visitors from the US - they received discounts without being asked for identification or citizenship.
As for free Sundays, policies keep changing. Some are back to free Sundays before 2pm (for a while it had changed to the first Sunday for the month), but certain sites now offer free Sundays for residents of Portugal. Best to check individual websites.
