Vienna Pension - anyone stayed here?

We are looking at staying in a Pension in Vienna. Lonely Planet described Pension Kraml ( www.pensionkraml.at ) as an absolute gem. It is only 2 stars, and we can get two adjoining double rooms (for family of 4) with private facilities for 110 euros per night in July, including breakfast. The website looks ideal - clean, comfortable, without the fancy extras that aren't important to us. Has anyone stayed here before?

I haven't stayed there, but the TripAdvisor reviews are very good.

I don't think the place will have air conditioning, which you might want in July.

Forgive me if you have already done this, but if this is a LP recommendation, it might be a good idea to also ask on the forum there, because there's a higher chance of getting someone who has stayed there.

Have not stayed there but it is in a good location...easy 10-15 min walk to city center or take the U-bahn (I always prefer to walk the wonderful streets). If you wander to the other side of Mariahilferstrasse you will evenually end up in the Spittleburg neighborhood...excellent small restaurants with great traditional cuisine. Your B&B should be just fine and the price for July is very good.

Thanks for those positive comments. I have not used Trip Advisor before, but at your suggestion looked them up and found the comments to be positive.

Suddenly I am inundated with choices however. I enquired about an apartment which was not available and the gentleman offered to send my request to all other owners of the Apartment Owners Association of Vienna. Within 24 hours I had offers of 5 apartments - 4 of which look very promising. Rates great, seemingly good locations, and mostly have car parking available.

Thanks for the feedback.

An apt is the best way to go; we have done this twice and had the best experiences. Are you trying this link:

We have stayed with the Kamineks in two different apts out in Floridsdorf...both great and only about 15 min to downtown by S-bahn. Also The Walkner family apartments Augarten are wonderful and closer in. Have you been to Wien before?

My husband and I were last in Vienna 26 years ago - long before children. Now we are taking the girls (aged 13 and 15). Things are a little more complicated as we are meeting up with a bachelor friend as well, so we need family accommodation as well as single accommodation. We had tried to find apartments (2 together) but were not having much luck. We did use the website you suggested, but either fully booked, or no replies. The website we are now finding very helpful is www.netland.at/wien . We also have a car, as this is part of a greater Germany/Austria trip, so we need somewhere with parking. Interestingly, Familie Walkner have been one of those offering us accommodation, so your referal is great! We have been lucky to get apartments at most other places we are staying and Vienna and Prague are the only places we are still to finalise.
Last year we travelled to Paris, London, Lauterbrunnen and Lake Como and found apartments to be fantastic! This year we have found it a little harder to find places in Germany and Austria - not really sure why.
Thasnks for the info.

I can say that Beautrix (Familie Walkner) is a wonderful landlady. My mother in-law and her students stayed with her last year and had a wonderful time, Augarten is very close to everything. I would say that this is a great value for you and your family. Check our site for more recommendations:

Thanks for the link, Operaman - looks like a great trip! We are staying in Durnstein for 3 nights before coming to Vienna, and have booked at Stockingerhof (awaiting final confirmation). Look like a lovely place - any comments? We are hoping to explore the Wachau using bicycles - sounds like a great thing to do with the girls!
On Vienna front, we have put in a booking with Family Walkner at their apartments - hoping to get confirmation shortly. The fellow who posted our request with Apartment Owners Association of Vienna really made life easy for us - we have a huge number of offers for some great apartments. Now, Prague to fix up and we count down to next June!

You'll love the Stockingerhof, but watch out for the Marillen schnaps...excellent but very strong. They have great wine there, try the Gruner Veltliner. Breakfast buffet comes with the room price as I recall. I think you will like the Augarten apts. Beatrix has good English and a great landlady, she has a small restaurant in the building as well. Biking is great along the Danube, you can bike from Durnstein to Melk (or further) and take one of the boats back down. The website is from our first trip in 2001 and we had a blast. You can rent bikes from Pedalpower near the Prater, Rick is an ex-pat American and great to deal with. A good ride from Vienna on bikes is up to Klosterneuburg (takes about an hour or less) very nice little ride with many places for food and drink along the way. If you need any help or have more questions you can email me through my website, very glad to help.
