I had a very hard time finding anything under $100 for Vienna in October. Dorint am Europaplatz was cheap, but asked on some message boards and was told it was in a pretty bad part of town. I heard good things about Pension Wild, but they weren't available.

I suggest hitting the guidebooks and making some phone calls!

Anne

You might take a look at Der Altwienerhof. It has single rooms for 58€. The breakfast is fabulous.
Downtown is easily reached by a bus less than 150 yards from the front door.
Frau Keller will do what she can to make your stay enjoyable.
The bathrooms are terrific; best I have seen in Europe.
The only drawback is that this is an old part of to town. But it is where people live. The U-bahn is very close as well.
The Westbahnhof is less than a mile away, and connection to the airport by taxi is quick, unless you want to go at 5 PM.
There are 2 I would recommend. The Hotelpension Arenberg (4*) and within the Ring is a part of the Best Western chain but with posh Vienna feel. It was about $50 in December 2000. You can access information at the BW homesite or nethotels.com. It is in a nice part of town, very accessible to U-Bahn, Air Terminal (where buses come in from airport), Stephensplatz. Staff is nice and they have homemade muslei.
The other is Hotel Drei Kronen (3*). It is just outside the Ring and an easy walk to the Opera. It is near the university and many visiting professors stay there. They have a very nice buffet breakfast. Both are very nice hotels with good friendly staff.

We liked Pension Hargita when we stayed there in June. The rooms were pleasant, clean and small, good bathrooms. Easy walk (20 minutes) to center of town, or take the convenient U-bahn.

http://www.bekesi.at/~hargita.at/en/home/index.asp
