Where to stay in Vienna?

Will be attending a workshop in September in - The Hofburg, Helden Platz (1st district). Want to know if there is a reasonable accomodation available near the place. Will stay for 5 nights.

Everyone has a different idea of what is reasonable. The Hofburg Palace is in the center of Vienna- thus usually the most costly area-
nearby you will find hotel Pension Pertschy - 5 minutes walk

www.pertschy.at

also Pension Aviano an easy walk.
Vienna has an excelent and inexpensive public transport system.
The Hofburg is easy to reach using this system so you are not really limited to just close by places.

The Vienna tourist office website has a hotel locator and is a good place to search for accomodations.
www.wien.info
Also check with the event organizer, they often have access to a special offer list or may even have blocked rooms for participants.

I second Pension Nossek. It's right on the Graben, nice staff, good prices.

There was major construction going on at the Graben when I was in Vienna in April. Perhaps molker can confirm if the work has finished yet?

I saw great reviews on the hotel Alstadt, but we instead stayed at the Marriott, since we had Marriott points. The Marriott was a very very hotel and in a very good location.

Check out the hotel Alstadt, it looks very nice... http://www.concierge.com/travelguide/vienna/hotels/2650

This renovation work is still proceeding on Graben and some nearby areas.
This work includes replacing underground utilities including gas, electric etc. then repaving the surface . new benches and new lighting.

The city wanted to replace the underground utilities - some very old - before the replacement of the walking surface too avoid hopefully having to dig again quickly when a problem appeared.

This work to continue for some time yet.

Still chaos in that area - even the 1A bus has been re -routed at times for this and some hazard for those walking-
some f this work directly in front of the Nossek.
