Vienna Hotel or B&B in City Centre

Two women in 60's (young 60's) will be in Vienna in June. We are only in the city for two nights so are looking for accommodation near the city centre - nice but not exhorbitant pricing in the range of $250 U.S per night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i stayed at the sofitel with my mom. got a great rate on www.gtahotels.com, and it was across the street from a bus stop and tram, but a nice walk into center at the ring next to the weinerkonzeert hall.

there is a new microbus also that shoots across the historic center in a straight ( more or less ) line, and also drops you near the hotel.

also a taxi stand in fornt of the hotel.. and taxis are very reasonable in vienna in my opinion.

beleveder castle/museum is out the back door practically, and from there the d tram goes along the ring.

WONDERFUL concierge.

fab breakfast included in our rate.

otherwise, there are a lot of threads on hotels here. do a search.

i have only stayed here, and hotel harmonie, in my numerous visits to vienna and like both of them. sofitel is more upscale.. but also only a 4 star.

sorry if you were a couple id recommend pension nossek
was about 110 euros back in 2006 and soooo wonderfully central
right in the graben so you can stroll and enjoy
aim for the graben- its soooo pretty and easy to walk to the sights and catch the hop on /off bus round town

I second the Pension Nossak. It's right in the heart of the pedestrian area, just around the corner from St Stephens cathedral and near many cafes and restaurants. Many sights are in walking distance and there's the underground and trams nearby.

I'm not sure why the previous poster recommended this hotel only if you are a couple as they do have rooms with 2 beds. I stayed there with another woman.

Thanks for the hotel advise. I was also surprised at the a the post about a hotel only suitable for couples. We are two widows - who enjoy travel. We have made two previous European vacations and have never found a problem finding hotels that have two beds in a room!!!

So far we have tried a number of pensions - with no luck. Our preference was for this type of accomodation but we are open to hotels also. We did try the Pension Nossek - but they wanted a minimum of four nights stay at that time. We also tried the the Sofitel but no double rooms for that date.

Is there something going on in Vienna during June or is it always difficult to find a room?

youre right Adrienne about pension nossek
and as soon as i posted i thought i should revise my suggestion

of course there would be a room with two beds

i guess i have double beds on my brain since im loooking for accommodation in russia for OH and me

i think pension nossek is great also because it has a lift
and the coffee they give you on arrival is about the warmest reception we received anywhere ( pretty good of the viennese!)

thanks for bringing it up...

The Best Western Das Tigra shows vacancy June 1-4. The rate is 131 Euro/night including a terrific buffet breakfast. The location is central, the rooms are lovely and the building historic. Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart lived at the address for Wolfgang's Vienna debut and he later returned there to live as an adult. For anyone interested in this hotel, make sure you book a room in the hotel itself and not the annex which is not as nice. It is worth checking out directly to see if there are any other available dates.

Thanks for the info....the soccer tournament. Well now I understand why everything seems booked. I tried to book the Best Western Das Tigra mentioned in the last post - and the whole last 2 1/2 weeks in June there are no vacancies. We are flying home from Vienna so have to be there those dates..also tried numerous other pensions and hotels with no luck. Should I look outside the city centre? we are there for such a short time - 2 nights - we felt being right in the city was important.

I see that no one has mentioned Pension Pertschy (but two mentioned Pension Nossek). I make this comment because Pension Pertschy used to be frequently mentioned by fodorites and I wonder if it has fallen into disfavor. I have stayed there 4 or 5 times, the last time being Sept. 2007. I did feel that it was going a bit downhill as far as being kept looking fresh (I don't mean clean, because it is spotless). It is so conveniently located though that I think I would continue to go. Would be interested in hearing other's comments on my observations.

I would suggest you email the hotels directly as often their web sites will say no vacancy for busy time periods, when indeed they do.

I'll also be in Vienna for 2 nights right at the start of June. Never been before; hear it's an expensive city; but does any one have suggetions for cheap n cheerful around 50euros (60 if I must!). Looking for a single room. Facilities down the hall OK.

Enjoy your trip, Helen.

I'm happy to have anyone tag on to this post - like two for the price of one. I'm still having trouble getting a hotel - the dates I need June 19 and 20 seem to be right at the soccer quarter finals. I've tried all the suggested hotels - Vienna Tourism and more - but so far with no luck and it gets to be very time consuming - especially since I'm not familiar with the city of Vienna and not quite sure where the location is that I'm booking. I'm going to start approaching the hotels directly - although I've found that many of the hotel sites seem to connect to booking agencies. Any more suggestions.. or you may find two sixty year old women sleeping on some park bench.

Know that Vienna has an extensive and efficient public transportation system so I wouldn't worry much if what you find is not central although central is certainly nice. Perhaps if you checked the Tigra directly you may have better luck - you should be able to get a direct number through the Best Western central booking site. Also take a look at eurocheapo.com for some other possibilities.

If you're still looking I have another suggestion to make. About 4 years ago my husband and I stayed 10 days in an apt. in the 7th district called the Rothensteiner Apts. Because we like to walk, we walked almost everywhere from the apt. However, there is a bus stop almost at the door which takes you to the center. The interesting thing about these apt. is that the price includes breakfast, even there are cooking facilities in the apt. I don't believe they have a minimum stay so they might be worth checking out. The website is: www.rothensteiner.com.

The Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth is a charming hotel in the center of Vienna, near the Stephansdom on a small side street with nice shops. It has standard doubles at 216 EU, but I don't know if they have openings for your dates.

We stayed there one June, for five nights, in their family suite, and it was perfect. Very Viennese. Has a lovely breakfast room and full buffet included. It's worth paying a bit more to stay there, if they have availability.

I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Pension Arenberg. It is within the Ring and an easy walk to St Stephens and just about anywhere in city center. Because it is BW you get discounts. It is a small hotel of about 22 rooms with the posh Vienna feel. My room had a balcony, bath & shower, queen size bed. For breakfast they serve homemade muslei. It is safe, convenient to U-Bahn and the bus terminal from the airport. I paid $50 off season but that was in 2000. I think it is more in the $150 range now. There are pictures of famous actors, musicians, etc. on the wall with references to Frau Arenberg who ran it before it became BW.
