I always used AutoEurope, a broker based in Maine. As noted, a one-day rental is expensive, usually as much as a three-day rental.
Note that the ZTL are not "lanes." They are areas within cities where only residents may travel and park without being fined. They are marked, but you need to be very observant and understand Italian.
