Bicycling or Motorscooter near Florence

My wife and I will be staying in Florence September 28 and 29 and Siena on September 30.

We will be visiting the American Cemetery near Florence. Florence American Cemetery is located on the west side of Via Cassia, about 7½ miles south of Florence.

We would like to rent bicycles or a two person motor scooter instead of using the bus to visit the cemetery but are concerned about traffic, roads, our safety, etc.

Does anyone have experience driving or riding the road from Florence on a road less travelled?

Thank you!

Sorry, but this sounds like madness. Don't even think of hitting the autostrada on bicycles.

http://www.florencebybike.it/ for bike rentals ,there are others go to Florence in google maps and then search under "noleggio di biciclette" or bici will do.

Not madness at all, though obviously you are not allowed on the motorway.

I'm struggling to find where the cemetry is, if you could again use google maps, if you click on the position and right click to see "what's here" you will get long. and lat. for the cemetry. Then we can guide you to the easiest route.

The Cimitero degli Americani is just off the Via Senese/Via Cassia (no need to take the autostrada) just south of Tavamuzze.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like SS2 goes past the cemetery.

GPS coordinates: N43 41.522 E11 12.551

So, if in fact SS2 is the way to go, is it a safe way to go??
If not we will be taking the bus from Florence.

Well the bus from the station are

365 A
Firenze Arrivi Alamanni * 12:23 15:54
Autostazione Sita Firenze 13:38 16:53 17:38
368 A
Firenze Arrivi Alamanni * 15:58
Autostazione Sita Firenze 17:19 17:33
370 A
Firenze Arrivi Alamanni * 11:18 12:13 14:53 19:26 20:43
Autostazione Sita Firenze 12:38 17:03

The SS2 should be good, if in doubt stick the little man on google on the road and get a feel for the traffic.

If you stick to the SS2 it will only be a bit hilly, you could go to the west a bit more and ride up a ridge with some great views.

Could do, jopo77, I have no knowledge of using a vespa or similar so cannot advise. I think florence by bike have an option for a motorbike, you can also search the same way for other rentals. Legally I'm not sure of license or helmet requirements. But if you email the same place I'm sure they will provide.
