Verona and Venezia-which hotels do you love?
Have never been to Verona and welcome any and all suggestions!
Have tried to book a couple of hotels in Venice for early June and struck out---La Calcina and Hotel Antico Doge are filled. Other recs? Would like to stay near San Marco, but don't need to be TOO near.
Thank you!!

Only went to Verona as a day trip, so can't make a recommendation other than to say it's a wonderful, wonderful place. We took a day trip from Venice there last summer.
Near La Calcina is the Hotel American. Terrible name, but lovely hotel and not exhorbitant prices. Good breakfast, free internet in the lobby, and very close to the Accademia (sp?) bridge, so a short walk to San Marco. We've stayed there twice.

I've also never been to Verona and just did a search here. Here are the 2 places I found and comments on them.
We stayed at Hotel Torcolo when staying in Verona in Novmeber. The location was excellent, rooms adequate and clean and the staff was wonderful
Colomba d'Oro is across the narrow street from the Hotel Torcolo, two blocks from the Arena di Verona (Roman Amphitheatre). Excellent area of town. Colomba d'Oro is a four-star property, one of the best in town.
As for Venice, Locanda Orseolo is universally loved (and probably booked). Novocento is supposed to be nice. What sort of budget? Is an apartment a possibility? Lots of info here.

Hi -- I second the Hotel American. We stayed in room 201 last July and it was wonderful. Our room was spacious, with 3 balconies and a modern bathroom. The hotel offers free internet in the lobby, as well. It's located just over the Accademia bridge, so we could easily access the vaporetto or by walking.
We booked using veniceby.com, but it is also listed on venere.com.
Good luck!
Heather.

In Verona we've stayed twice at the very lovely small Gabbia d'Oro in the center. Rooms vary but all are beautifully and personally decorated. There is a wonderful conservatory/lounge that could be in Architectural Digest -- where they serve drinks and you can just relax, and the breakfast is set up looking like a display of all the family silver and china. They also handled getting our opera tickets, and when it was rained out and we were leaving the next day, they took care of getting our refund and mailing it to us. This sounds expensive, but it isn't bad -- depending on whether or not the opera is going on.

We, too, enjoyed our stay at the Hotel American in Venice. Very near the Accademia vaporetto stop, but not too near!
We stayed at the Residence Verona House in Verona. All units there have kitchenettes, even the double rooms. Located in the old central part of Verona, across the street from the Castelvecchio, near the river and about a 5 minute pleasant walk from Piazza Bra (where the Roman Arena is located). They have a good website you can google.

In Verona the Colomba d'oro is indeed a beautiful hotel although my husband never liked the bathroom situation. A bathtub with one of those low handheld shower nozzles. I don't know if that has been improved or not.
Fantastic location, very nice staff etc.
Having said that with the weak US dollar if I was going to Verona I would find a less expensive hotel now.
The hotel I love in Venice is not real close to SanMarco so will not bother recommending it as know you will get lots of suggestions from others here that will be in the area you want.
Do have a wonderful time.
