Venice hotel help

We're spending two nights in Venice in mid-September. Looking for a nice hotel on the Grand Canal, but hoping to stay under $250 a night. I found a lot of hotels in the $250 range, but need help figuring out if there are any especially good ones, better values, etc. I've heard La Calcina is nice.. any opinions?
Many thanks!
Kelly

La Calcina is nice. My husband and I have stayed there on two different trips to Venice. It is not, though, on the Grand Canal...if that is important to you.

Thanks, Ruff. I actually just realized that when I started doing more research. La Calcina does look very nice, though!
Another hotel I came across while reading some reviews on TripAdvisor was Ca' Angeli .. Has anyone stayed here?
Best,
Kelly

IMO you don't really need to be on the Grand Canal. Just being on any canal and having a water view is great. The Grand Canal views can often be noisy.

Check the Locanda Orseolo.

I agree about staying off the Grand. We stayed three nights at La Calcina in early April. It was really nice and quiet, plus they have an awesome roof-top terrace that you can reserve. It is close to a vaparetto stop and you can walk to everything. If you are there over a Sunday, do the gregorian chant mass at the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore (you can see it from your window at La Calcina). Ask for a room with a view because they have some that are not on the water.

I thought La Calcina was great! We asked for a room with a terrace AND canal-view, but they only had a terrace room with a partial view (room 38) available for our dates. But it was a nice big terrace, and we did have a view of the guidecca canal and the church which motorcitygirl mentioned. Breakfast is served on the floating restaurant next to the hotel when the weather is nice.

Well, I just tried La Calcina and they're all booked up for the dates we're in Venice (Sept. 17-19). They did offer to let us rent a nearby apartment -- "Rosa" -- they own. But I don't think it's on the canal.. Other recommendations?
Thank you!

Hi Kelyspo, when you say $250.00 a night are you referring to $250.00 US or $250.00 Euro?

Kelyspo-you must at least consider Liassidi Palace Hotel: www.liassidipalacehotel.com.- in Castello, it's beautiful, the public rooms, the outdoor garden where you can take coffee or breakfast when it's warm, in a truly authentic and romantic part of Venice, 5 min. from everything-San Marco, Rialto, right around the corner from the Riva degli Sciavone, and it faces a small canal. Very quiet at night. The public drawling room on the second floor, where I took a coffee one evening, is magnifico. It's only been open since July 2004, so the rooms are brand new (with jacuzzis, I might add) but the hotel is housed in a magnficent 15th cent. pink palazzo. The shops and restaurants around the hotel are all very local-there are some very interesting artisanal mask shops just around the corner. The staff are great, and it receives superlative reviews on tripadvisor. Highly recommended.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

LoveItaly: I meant $250 US, sorry. However I'm not sure how realistic that is in September! I seem to be quoted the maximum prices everywhere I go.

Spygirl: Thank you very much for that suggestion. I just sent in a reservation inquiry to the hotel. The prices may be a little steep according to the Web site (450 euros max for classic double), but we shall see.

Anyone ever try Ca' Angeli?

I think if you put Ca Agneli in the text search you'll find mention. Also check tripadvisor.com. Have you looked at Pensione Accademia Villa Maravege?
