VENICE AND ?
Am HOPING to visit Venice the end of this October with my husband. We were in Florence in '96, so would like to visit a second place that we haven't been to. What would be an easy second experience? I would love to see Cinque Terre, but don't know if it is hard to get to. Would also love to see the Amalfi Coast. But I don't have a realistic sense of how hard it would be to travel to either of these places.

How many days will you have?
Assuming you will spend at least 4 in Venice, I'd take the train to Verona, spend the day, and then go on to one of the Lakes. spend a couple of days.
It would be convenient if you could fly into Venice and out of Milan, with the above schedule

Rome ? It's far from what I call an "easy experience", however if you haven't been there yet it should be on your list to visit.
As to going to the CT or Amalfi Coast, both are "doable" whether it be by car or by train; however it'll take you six hours travel time by train to get across from Venice to the Cinque Terre. And at least that same amount if you opt to go to Amalfi Coast area. I think Elaine's suggestion is a better idea -- go to Verona and then on to one of the lakes.

I'd do some reading up on what Verona may have to offer that might interest you BEFORE I committed even a full day to that particular city. Not that it isn't interesting but it certainly doesn't compare with Venice or Florence in terms of sightseeing or museum experiences. And it certainly doesn't compare to the lakes region (of Lombardy) in terms of natural beauty. If you have only a limited number of days I'd reserve at least two full days for the lakes region (Como or Lugano) if not more.

Good evening, Feiny
My choice above all others would be BOLOGNA, Would not think the Lakes,
Cinque Terra would be too good in late
October..The Amalfi would think a good
bet would be to take the train from
Venice to Naples, then a different
rail ride to Sorrento. base in Sorrento.
From there yoiu can take the train back
to Naples and Pompeii, the ferry toCapri, and bus thru the Amalfi as
far as Salerno and stop at any of the
towns enroute which you wish to visit.
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..
For Sorrento you can expect weather,
approx. HI 74deg.f.,LO 48 deg.f...rain
about 5.7"....
