Umbria - Tell me about Todi and Trevi
Still deciding between staying in an actual town in an apartment or in an inn out in the countryside next June for a week. I have found apartments in Spello that fit the bill and am checking availability and rates. We are leaning towards being in town now and I have found what looks to be a lovely apartment in Todi and another in Trevi, both towns I know little about. I have read positive things about Todi here and get the the impression that Trevi is sort off of the radar screen of many tourists, which sounds great. It sounds like both Trevi and Todi have good restaurants, which is really important.. I would love to hear from folks that have have stayed in or visited these towns. Would you stay there? Have you stayed there?
I have my heart set on Spello, but am open to other citiies/towns in case those options don't work out.
Here is the link to the place in Trevi:

Todi is a much larger town than Trevi with more people and tourists. We were there last October. It has many more restaurants and shops. The historical old town of Trevi is a small, quaint, hilltop village. When we stayed in Trevi about seven years ago, there weren't many tourists at all. Todi is also set high up. I like both for different reasons.

We visited both a few years back. Of the two I personally would choose Trevi. It's much smaller and has amazing winding streets through the town. We got a little lost wandering around, which just added to the fun. Todi is much larger, as mentioned above.

A few comments:
Trevi is a beautiful hilltown. Not much happpening, tho. I stayed in a little agriturismo there a dozen years ago.
I've been to Todi a couple of times, but haven't stayed there.
You might consider Le Case Gialle, a few km. west of Bevagna, a great little town. The owners are personal friends, they are most accomodating, you get fresh bread and the Tribune every morning on your doorstep, they have a pool. There are four little apartments. Take a look at their website.
If you need to stay in Spello (a terrific little town) La Bastiglia is a hotel at the very top of the town. Ample parking, great views and an adventurous kitchen.

To help you decide, you may want to look at a map and where you want to explore during your stay. One may be a better location base than the other.
If you do end up in Todi, consider a visit to the nearby lovely small town of Monte Castello di Vibio.

We stayed in Todi for a couple of nights and visited Trevi on our way to Assisi. We found parking in Todi to be quite difficult, so make sure your apartment has parking. Todi is cute but after a couple of days we were ready to leave. On our way to Pigge and the memorable Taverna del Pescatore we stopped in Trevi which was quite busy on a Sunday morning. There was a market in the square and lots of activity. That may be a Sunday special.

Thanks for all of your responses.
zoecat, I really had wanted to stay in the Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna area and Trevi is in the general vicinity and that's why I wanted to find out more about it. Todi is looking more and more like a day trip maybe. We want to explore Norcia and Piano Grande and perhaps Gubbio too as I hear so many wonderful things about it. We'll probably spend a night or two in Orvieto on our way up from Rome to wherever we end up.
DRJ, I think I've settled on staying in a town as opposed out in the country.
Marija, Would you recommend Taverna del Pescatore? The menu looks wonderful.

If you want to stay in the Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna area, I can HIGHLY recommend a lovely little hotel inside the small town of Bevagna called Palazzo Brunamonti. We stayed there for 9 days and did day trips everywhere from there, except for Gubbio which was the only place deemed too far away to drive to.
The small family-run hotel was spotless, the family running it were extremely sweet and helpful, breakfast was full and contained much more than usual in Italian hotels, and all in all we loved it.

In the center of Bevagna is Enoteca Piazza Onofri. Its a local favorite and the owner has a dozen or so apartments for rent in the center of town. Just go in and ask.
Taverna del Pescatore is on the west side of the road from Perugia to Spoleto. Watch for the single little sign just south of Trevi. Its just off the road. Worth the stop.
I, too, have visited Monte Castillo di Vibio. Its an amazing little town since virtually every structure is of the same stone. A neat restaurante in the center with suits of armor as decor.

HI Iamq,
Saw you mentioned Gubbio. Don't miss this town! It's really fantastic. The architecture is quite different from that in towns like Todi - Gubbio is more rustic and has beautiful views . I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you sqeeze Gubbio into your itinerary.

So we decided to rent an apartment in Spello for a week. We are staying at the Augustus apartment at Casa Spello. I think the weekend we are going to be there is the Infiorata!
We will definitely plan to visit Todi and Trevi as part of day trips.
Thanks again for all the tips.
Where we fly in and out of will influence the rest of the trip. I want to arrive in Spello the day before the rental starts. I think adding 2 nights on at the beginning and 2 on at the end would be good. We'll see...Lot's of time to plan.
