What zones are you choosing for your bids?

Any of the Firmdale hotels would be special, IMO.

I've stayed at The Pelham and at The Knightsbridge and would stay again in a minute. Small, beautifully decorated, comfortable, and well located.

PhilBill: Neither betterbidding nor biddingfortravel have many July bids recorded yet.

Yes - what zone(s) are you bidding. If it is Mayfair/Soho you aren't going to get a 5* for anywhere near $148 (and probably not a 4* either) . . . . .

Mayfair/Soho and Bloomsbury/Marble Arch.
I got an offer just now of $287 a night for a 5 star in Mayfair/Soho plus fees which brought the price to $345 a night.
Do you have any idea of the hotel?

Not really, because it could be one of the several that are listed on the Betterbidding or BiddingForTravel list, or it could be a completely different hotel. Personally, I would not consider most of the 5* hotels on those lists to be a better value than 4* hotels, with the exception of the Sofitel St. James, which seems most like a "true" 5* hotel. Read some of the reviews of St. Martin's Lane hotel for example.

If you want a cheap 4* hotel, and haven't succeeded with Bloomsbury-Marble Arch, you have a good chance of succeeding with the Kensington zone, even for less than $100. But it sounds like you are more interested in 5* hotels.

What bidding area is the Sofitel in?
No, I do not need a 5 star but location is important. I guess I was just thinking there may be a great deal out there!!!
We will not be there that long. We have stayed just off Oxford Streeet by Marble Arch before. Thnaks for all the comments and any further advice would be great.
I recently went on Hotwire for Prague and the so called 4 star we got has horrible reviews on TripAdvisor!!!!

Here are a couple of romantic options:

Miller's Residence

Hazlitt's

alternatively, the Royal Horseguards Hotel is a larger 4* in a Grade 1 listed building. It's in a great location, near Trafalgar Square and Westminster, and many rooms overlook the River Thames.

I have stayed at both the Chancery Court and the Sofitel. Chancery Court has nice rooms but lacks any charm-very corporate. Really enjoyed the Sofitel and preferred the location as well.

I just returned from a week in London, and loved our hotel, the Holiday Inn Kensington on Cromwell Road, in the South Kensington neighborhood. (Don't confuse it with the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum!)

Lovely neighborhood, across from Gloucester Rd. tube stop, spacious attractive room, very clean and friendly.

Check out their website for rates; they also give AAA discounts.

Enjoy London!

Thanks, weekender. I appreciate your feedback and comparison of the two. I'm looking for character and charm in a good location for our 1st trip to London. I'll take a closer look at Sofitel.

The 3 hotels that I previously suggested offer charm and location. Such hotels are rare in London, as most go for the modern look.

Another option would be to see if you can get a special offer at Claridges.

Thanks, Londonres, Millers looks adorable! Hazlitts is not available the dates we are traveling, and Claridges looks great also but the best rate there is $707.00 p/n. Currently we are booked in a Club level room at Renaissance Chancery at a pretty good rate. But it sounds like I won't be getting the charm that I'm looking for. Is Claridges worth the extra money? I'm also still looking into Sofitel.

The Royal Family goes to Claridges for their parties and it is regarded as one of the greatest 5* hotels in London. You might want to Email the hotel and try to see if they have anything within your budget. I know that they had special offers for spring breaks and it never hurst to try for a discount.

Personally, I would get a room or suite overlooking the river at Royal Horseguards Hotel.

Thanks for the input. I'm still looking at above mentioned, but would appreciate some advice on the following hotels, keeping in mind that we have never been to London, are celebrating our anniversary, and we quest for charm, atmosphere, location, comfy bedding and hot water for our showers . There have been excellent reviews on Chesterfield Mayfair and Dukes on Tripadvisor, but haven't seen a lot on this forum. Anyone have knowlegde of how these two would compare to the Chancery Court? Thanks much.
