trying to fit it all in-is Italy worth it?
We have 8 days in Europe in May. It is our first trip to Europe. Flying into Munich and doing day trips from there.
Would it be worth it to try and take the train to the Italian Riveria and find a place to stay for 3 days? We will be going by train-no car.

The train from Munich to Genoa is at least 10 hours one-way, so out of the 3 days you've allotted for the Italian Riviera, almost a day has been wiped out due to travel.
8 days is not long enough for 1 city or even 1 country, so forget about going to 2nd country. Believe me, there's a lot to see in Germany!!

The timing gets very tight with this idea. Do you have flexibility in where you fly out of or is returning to Munich UNAVOIDABLE?
For some of us, a five hour train ride is a bit of a deciding point. Five hours or less is easy and relaxed. More than five hours means that you have to worry about getting up early to catch the very first train and so forth.
Zurich is only 5 hours from Munich.
Venice is about 7.5 hours from Munich. Vienna is about 7 hours.
You could get into the Italian Alps (Bolzano, etc) in about 5 hours.
Just a few ideas.

Italy definitely warrants a return trip- all of its own. With 8 days, Munich and Bavaria will keep you busy! Have you set any of your itinerary other than your flight? There are several posts on this forum about where to go for day trips or how much time to spend in Munich/Salzburg/etc... if you let us know your "must sees" and what type of things you enjoy, we may be able to give some sound advice about what all you should see and do w/ your 8 days...

Prague is fairly close by train, and worth a visit. But I agree you have very little time.
If you are limited to Munich and want to see Italy, get a connecting flight to Milan, Rome or Venice, etc., on one of the discount carriers and spend the whole time in one area of Italy, but not both.

Nope. Enjoy your time in the Germany/surroundings area and save Italy for another time. UNLESS your flights in & out can be changed for different destinations.
Then... well, if it were me, I would attempt it. But only because I love the place.
BTW, I loved Munich too. The Third Reich walking tour there was the best part for me.
