We are driving from Trieste to Dubrovnik in early September. We have 7 days. We can't decide on the must sees - it all seems so beautiful.Is Dubrovnik really over run with tourists or is it worth staying there?
How to decide between Hvar and Korcula?
We plan a stop at Plitvice National Park - would appreciate some advice about accommodation in the park or near to it. We prefer B&B type or smaller hotels.
We live at the beach now, so looking for culture and interesting towns and villages, more than beach lifestyle.

Sally, the drive on the island of Hvar was one of the three scariest roads I have ever driven on.

The drive on the new road on Hvar is just fine, it's the road down the "spine" of Hvar you want to avoid!

As far as accomidations around Plitvice, we stayed at:

We were very happy with this sobe. It actually has several rooms, all new and the inside is a bit more like a small hotel.

Krka National Park is also excellent and is on the way to Trogir/Split.

Hey sssteve - just curious - what were the other two scariest drives you have done?

I think I must be insane, but we are still planning on taking that drive.

The worst by far was the "road to hell" - a beautiful valley in south Africa called "hell". The road was windy, narrow, with a straight dropoiff on one side, no side rail and was about 50 KM long.

In Trieste itself if you like old railways you will find the terminus of the Austrian Imperial railway from Budapest to Trierte, at that time the headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian navy. The station is good condition, and little visited.
The obvious main place between Trieste and Dubrovnik is Split, where the city centre is the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian.
Certainly Dubrovnik is full of tourists, but it is still well worth a stay.

My scariest drives were in Crete, especially the road to Preveli Beach- unpaved,single lane,hugged the mountain as it ascended with sheer cliff drop on the other side.Blow a tire & you're history.Didn't want to be the next memorial box along the way so we looked for an indentation & turned around.We may drive with caution, but you never know about the other crazies on the road.

Try another scary ride down the Skippers Canyon Road Sth Island New Zealand..... it had signs saying rental cars would not be insured on this route.

Salthegal -- We're planning on flying from Lyon to Trieste in mid-October, then renting a car to drive through Slovenia & Croatia for ten days, returning the car to Trieste. Which car company are you using? And are they permitting you to take the car into Croatia with no added charges or limitations?

I have found it very difficult to find company that will rent a car in Venice and let you take to Croatia. I did find one at AutoEurope but was expensive.

Would also be curious about what company salthegal used and how much.

Also, the question of must see in 7 days?
