Try this: Italia Rail 1-888-724-5727
www.railpass.com. I was able to do it through their website. Initially had difficulty but they said it was something about deleting the cookies on my web browser. You can call them if you encounter any problems.

Just a note to tell all of you who find the Trenitalia site impossible, that there is hope. I finally got reservations. There is joy in Mudville!
As I mentioned above, the damned site would not accept any of my credit cards. I was able to register successfully by turning off my pop up blocker, but it would not admit I had any credit, even though my card companies said my card was fine, and that no charges had been submitted.
I was beginning to believe that they should change the name of the site to, "Abandon Hope, All who Enter Here!"
I the end, I cheated. I used my wife's Mac computer, and the system worked like a charm. I now have tickets for my party of three from Rome to Firenze, and from Firenze to Venice.
Go figure===

nukesafe, I suspect they only allow one or two online purchases a day, and you got the lucky number that day.
We ended up purchasing our ticket from a travel agency office in Florence the day before our train trip. Just walked into an office we found on the street and they only charged 3 Euro to buy and print the ticket for us (in cash).
