I'll point out first, this is an old thread--still informational.
And I could not agree more about a taxi to start the trip--although there are always two of us. But it is stress free, door to door.
I will also mention something else about these bags with all the secret "places". Get used to it before you go so you know absolutely what is where. They can be completely confusing, and particularly on a trip with lots of new things, currency, passport, credit cards in "new" places.

Great point, Gretchen, about the suitcase pockets. In fact, when I shop for luggage, my standard goal is to find just a rectangular box style. That way I can pack the way I want, not the way the suitcase dictates.

All AF bus drop off points are near some taxi stand, a couple are at train stations and they obviously always have taxi queues. The taxis at the Montparnasse train station are up near the main bd Montparnasse.

Allesandroe--not really talking about suitcase pockets. The post above was about a purse recommendation. Purses are far worse than suitcases--know where your money is--and be sure it is there. Just a thought. ;o)
