We are going on a cruise leaving from Civitavecchia port. We are staying in Rome the night before the cruise. Wondering what is the best way to get from Rome to port?

There's a train that goes there, you could take a bus, take a taxi, hitch hike, walk, or ride a bike.

Of those choices, for me the "best" would be the train. The answer for you depends on your definition of "best". Do you want fast, cheap, or convenient? How would you rank them?

THere will be 4 of us travelling with suitcases. Looking for the most economical way to get there along with ease of travel. Keeping in mind that we will be travelling with 4 suitcases and 4 carrry ons. Not knowing where anything is and how far we would have to walk once we got off the train.

If it were me in that situation, I would take a taxi because I hate lugging suitcases on crowded trains when I don't have a seat reservation. Expect to pay around 100 Euro though.

for four people, a limo service would probably work out the best - perhaps not quite as cheap as the train but they come when you want them to come and deliver you to the port.

I'd just ask the hotel desk clerk to arrange a limo for you. You do not get to ask for 'economical' and 'ease of travel' in the same sentence cindy.

In my experience, the hotel desk clerk tends to recommend an expensive limousine service with whom they have a "relationship".

I've used romeshuttlelimousine.com and found them very reliable for airport pickup and delivery. (They are one of the services mentioned on the topic indicated by AnnHig above.) Often they charge less than the taxi would, but it depends on the number of people and other factors. It doesn't hurt to ask any of these services for a quote.

The train is very easy, but in Civitavecchia it involves hauling your luggage down and up some steps. Unless you can pack light, which doesn't seem to be the case in this instance, I wouldn't recommend taking the train.

I really think you need a limo service. There is no way a regular cab will hold 5 people, 4 large suitcases and 4 carry-ons. Even a van cab - if you can find one - might not hold it all.

Train plus a couple of cabs at the docks might work - but don't know how much cheaper that would be - and are you each able easily to haul your luggage around, up and down steps onto the train, and onto overhead racks or end of car bins on the trains.

annhig Just gathering information to give my sister so we can decide together. I am just concerned about lugging suitcases all around town, not knowing the terrain. We were thinking of walking from the train to Civitiavecchia port to catch the ship. Would that be a good idea. My other concern is about the Temperature at the end of august.

cindy - there's some good information above about the potential problems of using the train, and of course you'll have to get to the train station first, which will probably involve a cab, and by the sound of it you'll need a cab at the other end.

given that, and given that there are four of you, I think that I would book with one of the limo services above. but before you and your sis make the decision, you surely want to contact them to fin out how much it would cost, else you'll be making the decision in a vacuum!
