Sorry that this is not based on my first hand experience traveling to Trier, but as with so maqny cities in Germany, the city website is overflowing with good info.

I didn't even have to search for it - - predictably, the guess that it is www.trier.de was correct.

Or go directly to one of its many sub-pages - - http://www.trier.de/tourismus/english/leisure/index.htm - - to see the richness of choices offered there.

Best wishes,

Rex

It's a great town, but about 2 days max for me, and that's if you're interested in Roman ruins. The rest of the Mosel is much more scenic and there's a lot to see/do there too.

I think we stayed for about 24 hours (spending one night) and that was almost enough to see the sites, so to speak, but as Russ suggests two full days would probably be ideal.

We were in Trier in May '02. We were locating relatives and had we not found them, we would have left sooner. I agree, two days max.

I saw Hotel Dorint from the window of my hotel (Hotel Christophel - very nice hotel with a great breakfast with apricot juice!)and it seemed fine. We didn't stay at the Porta Nigra only because it looked too American for us, which made sense at the time.

There is a nice restaurant below Hotel Dorint, in the same building. I don't remember the name, but it's the only restaurant facing Porta Nigra in that building. We learned to not ask wait staff about tipping, they will tell you tip isn't included in bill, irregardless of the type of hotel.

Enjoy your stay!!

Houdi, We just returned from Trier last month. We stayed at the Dorint and were very pleased. Not spectacular from the outside, but the inside is wonderful. Two restaurants, both very good. Our dbl. room was 115e. This did not include breakfast. First class breakfast with the Porta Nigra in full view. We spent 3 nights here after traveling in France the week before. We saw all the sites and took a Mosel boat ride. (Share a sundae!) Across the roadway is a wonderful square of shops, cafes, dept. stores(nice), and open markets of flowers and fruit. No cars inside this square. Well worth 2 nights at least. Definely have dinner at the Brunnehof ajacent to the Porta Nigra. They have evening concerts on some weekends and outdoor dining on their private plaza. Moderate prices.
Have a great time!! Tracy and Curt

houdi: Two days will give you enough time to see the sites and wander the central plaza. Walk out to the Baths; not beutiful, but immense and very interesting. Also, be sure to go up into the hills South of town to see the Ampitheatre ruins. Again, not beautiful, but very interesting. They have posted a large representation of what the ampitheatre looked like in its prime. I wish more sites would do this. It really adds to the interest of the site.
We stayed at the Villa Hugel up in the hills above Trier. About the same price as Dorint, but totaly charming in and out and a great terrace breakfast included. The views of Trier and the surrounding countryside from our room were really nice, especially at night.
A little story here. We were getting ready our first morning and the TV was on. Not paying particular attention, but, it was about the German Blitzkrieg and was focused on tank formations and attacks. I went to our view window and saw, believe it or not, tanks, many tanks, rolling across the hills in what appeared to be some kind of formation. Took me a minute to realize that there were indeed many tanks, but they were on flatbed train cars in transportation. Because of the bush and shrubbery, one could not see the flatbeds below and because of the hills, the tracks snaked around and the tanks didn't appear to be going in a straight line. Momentary puzzel, but we recovered in time to thoroughly enjoy Trier. Have a great trip.

Thank you everyone for your very helpful suggestions!! I just returned from my trip to Trier and there was plenty to see during my 1 1/2 days there. The Hotel Dorint was great. It was conveniently located and for 111 E per night I got a large room, ample buffet breakfast and a 4-course dinner one night and a 5-course dinner the next!! The food was delicious- the only problem was that it was impossible to eat so much.
