You can take a train from Rome to Civitavecchia train station, from which you can walk or taxi to the cruise port. Depending on how many of you there are, you might also try a private or shuttle service transfer.

You can take a train directly from Rome to Civitavecchia. It will only cost around 8-10 Euro then its a short walk along the coast to a free bus/shuttle that will take you to your departure point at the harbor. A site I use alot when planning my trips to europe is www.noambit.com . They might have an article about this.
Have fun!!

Kathy: I have no idea what your finances are, but you've spent mega bucks for this cruise, right. So, why not splurge and take a limo to Civitavecchia from your Rome hotel or the airport?? There are loads of web sites for these drivers or you can use our favorites, Bob's Limo Service or [email protected]. Don't forget you'll be schlepping at least one large bag + carryons. Plan on a 1 1/2 - 2 hr. ride there. And, do try to arrive about 1:00PM, so that you'll have lunch on the ship.
We're taking a Princess cruise that ends in Civitavecchia and plan on doning this limo service again.
Re: hotel in Rome..Have you checked the Hotel Gregoriana just above the Spanish Steps? It's small, really a botique hotel and the price is much less than the larger ones. Our favorite location in Rome is just above the Steps. Any other suggestions, feel free to ask. I know some good moderate restaurants in Rome, where prices are sky-high.

Thank you all for your advice. I still haven't chosen which hotel to stay at in Rome. I have planned to arrive 2 days before the cruise, so we can do some sightseeing in Rome. I'm going to check into that limo service to the port also. thanks again.

Try Hotel Modigliani in Rome (42, VIA DELLA PURIFICAZIONE, Tel. 0039 06 42815226 Fax. 0039 06 42814791; [email protected]; www.hotelmodigliani.com. It is located close to the Spanish Steps. The people at the reception are really nice. The hotel is basic but it is hands down one of the best bets in Rome if you don't want to splurge on the Inghilterra for instance. I stayed there last summer and I'm going back this year (for a weekend before a cruise that leaves from Civitavecchia). I contacted the hotel about transportation to the port. They told me that the train is quite reliable and a private limo will be 160-180 Euros.

We are planning to stay in Rome for a few days after we come back from our cruise. Problem is that we have my mother with us and she has mobility issues. And with all our luggage we cannot possibly walk to the train station. Everyone tells me there is no shuttle to the train station from the port. Is this true?

We just came back from a cruise that started in Civitavecchia. We shared with 2 other couples a car transfer with romeinlimo. Another good company for transfers is
romecabs which I used for transfer from the airport to our hotel in Rome.

I took a shuttle provided from Fattori car Service.
It was shared with two other couples, it was fast (about an hour) and really comfortable.
The price was also great compared to other solutions like train or other companies.
Their website is http://www.fattoricarservice.com

Axlrm's recommendation of a shuttle from Fattori car service sounds very reasonable - no more than 43Euros/pp if there are two or more people sharing. It certainly beats the ship's transfer of USD$92/pp.
However, if you are adventurous and want to take a train to the port yourself. Look up at www.trenitalia.com to have an idea of the train schedule. Decide if you want to get on from "Roma Termini" station(Rome's main train station) or one of the city's smaller stations. Learn how to buy train tickets from www.RonInRome.com, and be aware that there are pickpockets at busy train stations.

I found the transfer service to my accommodation directly with the Vacation Rentals agency I have booked with http://www.leonhouses.com or the affiliate or similar (I guess) http://www.leonrome.com. They offered it together with the apartment rental. I paid something as 90 EUR for a mini-van, I do not know if the price was good. Anyway I had only 3 days so it was the faster way to get into the city centre.

Hello Kathy, I hope you are still reading.
"Europe For Visitors" posts a very detailed and easy-to-follow instruction on how to take train from Rome to Civitavecchia:

And below is for the other direction, from port back to Rome:

You can get a taxi from an arriving ship but you may have difficulty persuading them to only take you to the local train station. Most of them would dearly love to take you all the way to Rome and it will not be cheap.
