Rome to Civitavecchia

After one week in Rome we will be departing on a cruise out of Civit. I know the train is a budget-friendly option, but we are leaning to something a little more convenient. Any ideas on a reasonably-priced option?

If you are leaving from Rome, I am relatively sure your cruise line offers a shuttle that will pick you up in Rome and deliver you dock side to you ship. IT IS MONEY WELL SPENT, as I suspect you will have more bags than usual and it saves headaches, and is most efficient.

Its about a 45-55 minute bus ride from Rome to Civitavecchia. I don't know where the train or bus station are(we had a car rental dropoff) but you will still pay a taxi fare, along with slepping your bags... just not worth it. PS. When the taxi hears where you are going they have no mercy. We got hit 20 Euro for a 5 minute drive from the rental agency to the port. Bon voyage!!

We recently left a cruise ship in Civit. its a 15 minute not easy walk with luggage!! fron the station to the port where there is a shuttle to dockside. The ship shuttle is exspenxive . go to www,cruisecritic.com & click on ports info & you may find mini bus info on there.

www.romeshuttlelimousine.com is dependable and has probably the lowest fares for limousine transfers. www.romecabs.com is more expensive but offers you an English-speaking driver if that matters to you.

We used Rome Cabs for a private transfer, they were reliable. Remember, if you use the cruise lines transfers you will need to go to one of there pick up points in Rome. A private door to door transfer is more convenient.

Does anyone if you can take a train from Venice to Civitavecchia and if so is should we get tickets now or can we wait until we arrive in Venice? Any details (length of train trip, price , website etc... would be appreciated) Our cruise leaves from Civitavecchia, but we wanted a couple of days in Venice before departure.

It would be a long train trip with changes. Trenitalia says 6 hours with a change in Rome. Cheapest price is 66€.

Take one of the fast Eurostars (ES) from Venice to Roma Termini, then connect to an Intercity (IC), Eurostar-City (ES-City), or local "Regionale" ("R") train from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia.

Try to purchase train tickets in Italy a couple of days beforehand. No need to do so from the U.S. (or your home country).

Dear GAC,
From the EuroStar website -- it doesn't look like the REALLY fast trains go from Venice to Rome . They only go from London to Paris and that sort of thing. Their are trains that go from Venice to Rome and take about 4 hours . Is that what you were talking about?

sw637 - The Italian trains are eurostar. Look on the Trenitalia website (the Italian train company), not the Eurostar website which is only for the trains between Paris and London.

The fast trains on Trenitalia will either be listes as ES (Eurostar) or AV.

The "longest" part of a train trip to Civitavecchia from Venice will be that regional service from Rome which takes a good hour...no reservations needed for that segment and usually 2nd class seating is what's available.

So, sure it can be done and yes I suspect you can easily wait and buy your tickets IN VENICE unless you are going to travel over some sort of major holiday.

We too are leaving from Civitavecchia on a cruise (on 8/31)but spending time in Venice first. Just spent something like 2 hours on trenitalia.com... first booking as one through fare (no eticketing allowed) then booking each part (VCE-ROM, ROM-CVC) seperately (same price but e-ticket allowed. Then refused my Amex card, then my visa, then my Mastercard! Got a weird email asking me to send that email, a copy of my passport, and some private info to trenitalia so they could approve the CARD... while wiping out the reservation... I am almost redy to spend the extra $100 the US based websites charge for the extra 2 tickets! Will keep folks posted!

Trenitalia states on their website you can't use a US based AmEx. They also at times have something about not being able to process American credit cards, but they have never allowed the AmEx. Buy your tickets in Italy. It's not that big of deal. The Rome/Civitavecchia portion certainly doesn't need advance purchase since most of those trains can't sell out. If you are really that stressed about it, buy them the first day you arrive in Italy.
