I agree that traveling to Turkey without a tour is quite easy, particularly if you get a good guidebook or two. I thought The Rough Guide the best of the half-dozen I used when planning my time there. Once you have a sense of the things you most want to see and experience, come here for fine-tuning.

Lwhites,
I do not know the Morocco forum on Fodors, but the Turkey forum is very helpful with many recent and earlier travelers pitching in to give their recommendations, suggestions and sharing their experience with trip planners.
You will find responses from all ages and budgets in terms of hotels and meals and from nature, history, beach and adventure or peace lovers or honeymooners, birthday and anniversary celebrating visitors.
I was on TA for many years until I stopped last year and have also been the OP on other Fodors forums where I had a hard time getting helpful information and answers to my questions.
Here on the Turkey forums, I find that I very seldom feel like anything I add would be needed although I am a resident.
If you are adamant, here are two options :
1. Fest Travel : upscale, cultural tours. possibly the best historic, architectural, archeological tours possible in groups or individually.
2. allaboutturkey.com with Burak Sansal, an experienced and pleasant fellow who was a DE on TA and can personalize your touring needs. Helped us out with our in-laws from Detroit some years ago.
Good luck whatever you decide.
