Too late for tulips??
Hello all! I have an 11 & a 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam on my way to Istanbul. I was in Amsterdam a few months ago and really enjoyed it, but was interested in seeing something new. I'll be there May 23--is that entirely too late to some beautiful tulip fields?

Sorry to say that I think the tulips will be completely done by then. We were there last week and they were already deadheading the early and mid-blooming tulips. The daffodils were completely done and we only saw one field with still-blooming hyacinths.

I really think you will be too late. I live in the Skagit Valley in Washington State, and our area produces a major portion of the U.S. crop of tulip bulbs. I assume the season here is roughly that of Holland, and I drove by some fields today. Workers were out there topping our tulips. Our tulip festival ended this weekend.
You should drop by to see our fields next year. http://www.tulipfestival.org/

With the mild winter we had in Europe, spring came almost three weeks earlier than last year, so I'm afraid the tulips will be long gone by late May. Here in Stuttgart they were just starting to bloom at this time last year; whereas this year they are almost all done and now the lilacs are all blooming!

Yes, spring is extremely early and fast this year. Weather and nature are like mid to late May. The chestnut trees are in bloom. The lilacs are almost done in the Rhine valley, and I spotted the first wild rose two days ago. May 23 will be perfect for roses, but not tulips.

Maybe you'll see the tulips in Istanbul -- they were magnificent when we were there last week. And if you'll be in Cappadocia, you'll be amazed at the incredible scent of all the apricot trees in bloom. I'll never look at an apricot again without remembering how gorgeous those groves smelled!

Does anyone have any suggestions for quaintish towns that I could visit outside of Amsterdam during my layover?? I was in Amsterdam a few months ago, and while I enjoyed the city, I would like to see something else this time around. I have 11 & a 1/2 hours, so I could stand riding a train for bit to get to my destination.
Pittsburgher--Did you enjoy Istanbul?? I've been there twice and am actually living there for the entire summer! Cappadocia is definitely on my list to check out- looking forward to the apricots!
