I guess we will never agree on the Brünig Pass. As far as I am concerned, when we started down it in August for the 6th or 7th time, my wife's reaction said it all: Well, here we go again.
Col St. Bernard is a little more interesting to say the least.
True trains don't go there, but cars do.

bob - i would agree with your assessment comparing those awesome road passes with the tamer Brunig Pass as i respect your Swiss insights tremendously
but if you have never done any similar trip the Brunig Pass is quite nice - and again it's the along Lake Brienz portion as well - with the high snowcapped Alps framing the lake.
And if it were your first such ride on a cog (rack) railway you would never realize that there were even more awesome ones.
And it's the quickest way by rail to Lucerne - trains every hour.
I too love the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne - and with a Swiss Pass the steep entry fee is covered in full if using a 100% covered flexible travel day (or on a consecutive day pass)

WE took the Brunig Pass route from Luzern to INterlaken last summer for the first time (after 4 trips to Switzerland). Have to say, the scenery was very impressive---adult kids kept shifting seats to see the waterfalls. And the trip along Brienzersee was lovely. We cold see the Grandhotel Giessbach and its waterfalls, which I long to visit, from the train.
It's a slow trip, however.

Golden Pass, official tourist trains with commentary i believe, have domed observation cars on some cars on the Interlaken-Lucerne Brunig route.
They've told me in Interlaken several times that reservations are not required but should be made to secure a place in an observation car.
Yet the hourly regional trains over the same route obviously offer the same scenery. But if the Golden Pass is leaving at a time convenient to you hop on (confirm that reservations are still not required at ticket window, however)

Noncomformist - i know you have your questions fairly well answered... but i just love the Berner Oberland and can go on and on and it's fun!
Bob Brown was talking about the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne and even if you are not normally intrigued by trains, Swiss postal buses, etc. the museum makes a novel thing to include in a Lucerne day - mainly because it's a good way to include a short boat ride on Lake Lucerne that takes you the few miles to the lakeside museum itself - about a 15-min boat ride and you get nifty views of the fjord-like nature of the lake.
Take a quick look at the museum (free with Swiss Pass if 100% covered days) and then hop the frequent city buses back to train station (also free on 100% covered days on Swiss Pass).

Yes, thanks a lot for all your input, Bob and Bob. I'll think about the transport museum, but to be honest, I might give it a miss just because I'll have so little time in Lucerne. I'll wait and see, though.
