Is it possible to spend the day in Interlaken having dinner and catch a late train back to Wengen? Is Interlaken worth the day trip..not to be ignorant but just don't know???

In my opinion, Interlaken is not worth trading a trip to any mountain accessible from Wengen, by train or cable car. In addition to the Jungfraujoch, you can take the cable car to the top of the Maennlichen and walk or take the gondola lift down to Grindelwald and go from there to the top of the First (you can do this also in a roundabout way by train via Lauterbrunnnen). Also from L. you can head to the top of the Schilthorn, to the Truemmelbach Falls, etc.
The only worthwhile day trip from Interlaken would be to take a boat to Spiez or Thun and then take the train back to Interlaken.

You could have a trip as has been suggested on Lake Thun and walk through Interlaken from the landing stage at Interlaken West (Lake Thun) to Interlaken Ost station for your train to Lauterbrunnen and/or explore the Unterseen area, this is the oldest part of Interlaken. If you do this, walk up the slope\from the landing stage and turn left (don't go over the level crossing) walk along over the two bridges and turn right at next corner, this takes you into the old part of Unterseen, and then walk the length of the little square, visit the church yard and return to the main street through to the Ost station, by walking along to the road that runs into the square level with the church but in the opposite corner(hope that makes sense) walk along this road over the level crossing (different level crossing) and you will come back into the Hohewegg by the side of the Post Office. There is a small museum in the square, it's about the local tourism industry and history. I can't reccommend it because it's many years since I visited the museum, but I would think about an hour at the most would be more than sufficient for a visit.

Murren, Lauterbrunnen, don't think there are any others, oops yes there's a hamlet above Luterbrunnen, Isenhfluh(sp) and of course Rick Steve's favourite Gimmelwald below Murren and then probably Stechelberg at the end of the valley
