taxi from the airport to rome
my mom, sis and i leave for italy on saturday and i have some questions about taking taxis from the airport in rome. i've heard that some taxi drivers in italy have a tendency to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists by driving around, running up the cost of the trip before getting you to your destination.
so, how can we avoid this? should we take a taxi? that seems to be the best method for us since we'll have our luggage in tow.
any thoughts? thanks!

Forget the regular taxis and email Stephano at RomeCabs. [email protected] or [email protected] A private company that he runs and it is very dependable, safe, and easy. He responds quickly to emails.
Stephano will meet you just outside of customs, load your luggage, drive you to your hotel (and give you a drive by tour of the major sites on the way), for about 45 Euros. He drives Mercedes Minivans or sedans and speaks very good English. You won't be disappointed, we never have been.

I have read the following about cabs in Rome (Rick Steves and elsewhere):
1) Have a lot of small bills with you, in case the cabbie claims he doesn't have the correct change
2) Before you leave, ask your hotel what a fair taxi rate is between the hotel and the airport, so you know what might be unreasonable
3) Make sure the meter is restarted when you get in the cab
MOST IMPORTANT
4) watch out for hustlers using unmarked "express taxis". Only use official taxis with a taxi sign on top and phone number on door

I was very pleased with limousineservicerome. Don't have the website handy but you can google it. Picked me up on time outside customs and picked up my friend a few hours later. We then both took this service back at the end of our trip. The cost was $50 last year per person for our single trips but $50 for the both of us on return.
I think with a taxi you have to nail down the price to your hotel before you get in the taxi.
Also, if you take taxis around Rome be sure to look at the meter (after asking the driver the cost) so you will get the price you expect. I/we failed to do that twice and got ripped off. Very disappointing. It shouldn't cost more than about $10 to go from one end of Rome to the other.

Thanks to everyone for the info!
Ira, thanks for passing along the rates. It definitely helps to know how much we can expect to pay.
Everyone on this forum has been so helpful. I'm sure I'll think of something else I need to ask before we take off

Here is a list of providers and fares of transfers from the airport to a central hotel in Rome that I prepared for our trip this fall. These are based on an arrival of our flight at 9:45 PM, so earlier arrivals may be less. Also on this list are some fares for transfers from the hotels to the port. I computed the Euros to USD several weeks ago, and this of course can flucuate.
Airport/Port
1: Benvenuto Limos $85 (70 E) $242 (200 E)
2: Bob's Limos $84 (70 E) Time $212 (175 E)
3: Rome in Limo $73 (60 E) $206 (170 E)
4: diy-hols $60 (50 E) Shared ? $194 (160 E)
5: Viator $104 (86 E) Time
6: Rome Airport Shuttle $68 (56 E)
7: Rome Shuttle Limo $56 (45 E) $179 (145 E)
8: Eldcar $85 (70 E) $212 (175 E)
9: ATS.net $73 (60 E) Private $48 (40 E) Shared
10. Airport Connection $60 (50 E) $185 (150 E)
11. When In Rome Tours $60 (50 E) $160 (130 E)
12. Rome Cabs $56 (45 E) $155 (125 E)
13. Roma Shuttle $60 (48 E) $160 (130 E)

I can second the recommendation of Rome Cabs. We used them recently not only for airport transfers, but also a day tour into the country and tours inside Rome, and were very pleased. Prompt, efficient, courteous and professional service, not to mention the fact that Stefano, our driver, was also very personable.

If you take a taxi from the airport, the important thing to do is to say to the cab driver the amount that you assume the ride will cost.
So according to Ira it is 45-50, just get the price out in the open while you still have your bags with you and you have not entered the cab.
Remember they might charge a bit more for night travel and/or a lot of baggage. Just be sure to agree to a price before you get in (and make sure it is a legit cab).
