FCO into Rome by Taxi
Rome taxis have a flat-rate of 40E for up to 4 persons and luggage into the center of Rome. This is a fair price for door-to-door with little or no waiting or prearrangements, and sounds preferable to a shuttle or the train which takes an extra step to reach the hotel.
Assuming one goes out to the taxi rank and secures an official taxi (comuna di Roma), is it very common to be hassled for more than 40E? Do you show the driver the page from Romeguide that states the rate is 40E..? or is there anything more official that one can show the driver to gain agreement that the rate is 40E, or is all of this unnecessary?

Try contacting www.romeshuttlelimousine.com It was recommended by several people on Fodors. My son used them last week from FCO to central Rome. The cost was 35E. You can contact them online. The driver was wonderful and even gave him a tour of Rome as he was driving him into the city. What a wonderful way to begin a 6 month study abroad program.

We took a taxi from FCO to our hotel in Rome on May 27th of this year. Just before reaching the line of regular taxis, one or two men tried to get us to go with them but we said, "No." They did not hassle us further.
Before we got into the taxi I said, "40 euro?" The driver agreed and that was that. At the hotel (after a bit of a wild ride!) I paid him the 40 euro plus tip and he zoomed off into the late afternoon traffic. He even offered us a cigarette during the drive but we declined.

4-5 people is 50€, not 35€
so a taxi is less.

Before you ever get into a taxi at FCo,tell the driver where you want to go and ask how much.If they state a higher price-state the 40Euro price and see what they say. I have always had drivers who were fair.

Travelnut, I'm glad you asked this question as I've been wondering the best way to get 4 people into Rome from the airport myself.
I had bookmarked romeshuttlelimosine.com but then noticed that they seem to have raised their rates for anything over 3 people.
Do you think 4 people plus luggage can fit in a regular taxi?

Now, for Paris/CDG, people frequently advise that a party of 4 can go to the taxi rank and get a larger vehicle, although you might have to wait a few minutes. Would this be true for Rome?

When we went several years ago, the taxis (we asked more than one but they were all in line together) all insisted the fare for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children with 4 carry-on sized pieces of luggage) would be 80 euros! We ended up paying as there seemed to be no choice even though we knew we were being overcharged.
The last time we went, we arranged for a car service instead and were delighted we did as there was a taxi strike that day and the price seemed fair.

There is an official 'flat rate' for the airport-to-town trip so the driver may not turn on or use the meter. So that could leave the possibility open that the driver tries to get more than the 'flat rate' out of you. (in the case of extra bags, that would be acceptable).

Just as with many large cities, the fare from the airport to downtown or the city center, is a flat fare. If you were to hop into a cab anywhere else, you can always ask ahead of time the approx cost to go somewhere so that you're prepared. The unregulated cabs should not ever be in the offical taxi line. You cannot hail a cab off of any curb like in the US. You must find a cab stand.
