Symphony in Prague-Municipal House
My husband and I will be in Prague at the end of February for 2 nights and would like to go to the Symphony while we are there. I noticed that there is a performance playing at the Municipal House then. Has anyone been to one there before? Do you recommend we purchase tickets before we leave home or is there usually availability on the day of the show?

I have used this company to buy tickets on several occasions and had them delivered to my hotel (small fee).
there are sevral concert venues within the Obinci dum (municiple house. There are often tickets for sale right up to the concert time, less so in the busier summer period.
I have only ever been to a concert in the smaller Smetana hall, but the main hall is magnificent.
You can also do a tour of this very fine building ,there are also several bars and resturants where you can eat and drink.the main resturant area often has a small band playing in the afternoons.it is always a must stop place for me when i am in the city.

There are daily Classical music concerts/Symphonies/choirs/ church music in all the Halls and many churches all over Prague. ...esp. (Beethoven, Mozart etc.being the most popular. When you walk along the streets there will be people selling tickets from small kiosks. There is a larger office near the astr. clock tower too. You can have your pick and tickets are always available and cheap too.
I am going again to Prague this summer and looking forward to the magical concerts each evening. Enjoy.

as ktinde has said there are lots of places doing Tourist concerts and i went to one in St Georges Crypt up in the castle complex,it was only an hour long early evening concert, but was very good and was the first time i had ever heard a harpsicord being played live.
well worth making an effort to go to one of these before your evening meal.

It depends how much you really want to year a particular program or conductor, etc. If you just want to go to a concert, as others said, there are many to choose from, but the real ones (not the tourist ones) can sell out in Prague, sometimes quite early, for someone of particular interest. I've been unable to get a ticket a couple months in advance for something I wanted to hear when Ashkenazy was conducting, for example (but that was the Czech Philharmonic, not the PSO).
There are always lots of performances at the Municipal HOuse BTW and many of them are tourist concerts and not always in the main concert hall. However, I assume since you mentioned the actual symphony, you mean the PSO. I would be interested in the program with the Prkofiev 3rd concerto, if that's the one you mean, as that is one of my favorite concertos. That pianist, who is Swiss, has had good reviews.
Having said that, there are many good things at the Rudolphinum, also.
If it were me, I'd buy in advance, but it depends whether this is just something you think would be nice, or whether you really want to hear that orchestra in that program with that conductor/pianist.

hi Jh,
I'd like to 2nd [or is it 3rd or 4th?] the recommendations for a concert and meal [or two] at the municipal house. we had two meals in the crypt restaurant - traditional czech food - and attended a christmas music concert in the concert hall, for which we bought the tickets the day before.
if you are only there for 2 nights, it would be a chame to miss it if the tickets were already sold out.
on the other hand, had you thought of the opera? we went to an excellent production of Madam Butterfly at the Opera house which is gorgeous, and very cheap by UK standards. here's the link for the February programme:

if you decided on that, i definitely would recommend booking in advance.
regards, ann

I don't know about the symphony, but the Municipal House is one of my favorite buildings in the world. IMO, it is not to be missed. If you go to a performance somewhere else, try to take a tour of the Municipal House at some point. That's the only way to see all the magnificent rooms. Have a great time in Prague!

Thank you to all for the wonderful suggestions. I think we will book in advance "just in case" we weren't able to obtain tickets on that evening's performance. It sounds like we will need to eat, tour, and listen! I am very excited!!!

I took your advice and purchased the tickets! Thank you for that link. I couldn't find the section where they deliver them to your hotel, but I was able to us the print them at home option.
Thanks again.
