Switzerland in October/Cold?
Staying in Grindelwald in early October. I am getting very different opinions on just how cold it wil be. In September we will be in Austria and Germany, and that apprears to be comparable to US North East Temps. perhaps a little bit cooler at night.
I get cold very easily..particularly hands and feet. Trying todecide if I need to pack boots and ski coat.
We are hoping to take the trains to the higher elevations and hike/walk around a little.

Hi,
Wool socks can make a big difference for your feet. Wore them last Dec. in the Austrian alps with my regular Rockport walking shoes. We were just looking through our photo's of our trip to Switzerland, including Wengen, in the Berner Oberland, many years ago. During the days we were wearing heavy sweaters. If you get cold easily, bring a winter coat/ski jacket. Even if it's nice during the day, it will be cold at night and early in the mornings.

Depends on how high you will be walking around. If at the mountaintops you'll be in snow and it will be cold (it was chilly even in June at the top of the Jungfrau and the ski school was in operation). (I was fine in a tee shirt, long-sleeve shirt and jean jacket - but we were outside for only about an hour.)
If you're be hiking a lot in the foothills could be quite cold and it sounds like you are supersensitive to cold weather (I don't put on a winter coat until the temps go into the 30s - just wear leather jacket before that. And I find that walking around briskly warms you up a lot.)
Of course you will need some sort of footwear that will work in snow or sleet - more likely the higher you go.

Thanks all for the info. Yes will vacuum pack my ski coat & winter boots and pull it our for this part of the trip.
Next question: staying in Grindelwald. Welcome suggestions for day trips that will not involve too much travel time.
We were defintiley thinking afternoon in Wengen. Would love to see Piz Gloria again (there many years ago). Will trains and lifts be available in early October?
