Stonehenge day trip FROM Oxford?

Hello all!

My husband and I recently moved to Oxford and we're about to have our first visitors from Canada (2 of my younger sisters: 2 April-12 April) -- it will be their first time to the UK, and we're looking for relatively close day trips.

I found one company -- Backpacker Bus -- that does daytrips, but they don't start until the week after my sisters leave. If anyone knows of other companies operating in the area, or other suggestions on getting to Stonehenge from Oxford, I'd greatly appreciate any and all input!

Many thanks,
meagan

I don't know how old or active you and your sisters are, but we did an absolutely delightful day trip to Stonehenge by taking a train to Salisbury and renting bikes there for the 11 km ride to Stonehenge. It was a beautiful ride on back roads.

We started in Bath, not Oxford; the train ride from Oxford is a bit longer (2 hours each way, including a 1/2 hour stop to change trains in Basingstoke).

Might it be better to go to Swindon then get the bus down especially if you want to combine it with Avebury

www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/ta/index.asp gives bus service information to various places in the area

I agree - If one is visiting Stonehenge - then Avebury is a good counterbalance.

You could see Stonehenge and also walk among the stones/village at Avebury and eat in a pub there.

My brother gave rave reviews to one from Bath. And i am doing it in May. It combines Avebury as well. Maybe you can combine a stay over in Bath.

also, recommended by Rick Steves and Lonely Planet

The easiest is of course to drive there. Then you can go to Avebury, and the Vale Of the White horse too, just to keep in the prehistoric mood.
