We are planning to use public transportation to get from Bath to Salisbury and then from Salisbury to Stonehenge, for this upcoming weekend in February. Is there public transportation to get to Avebury as well? Have others done this trip including these 3 in a day and is it do-able? If there is public transportation to get to Avebury, does it bring you close to the stone circle? Thank you!

I've done a bus to Avebury but I got it at Swindon.

Next to impossible from Salisbury. You can take a train from Bath to Swindon and then a bus to Avebury. (If you want to get there from Salisbury, first you'd need to return to Bath)

Are you sure you don't want to rent a car - Stonehenge, Salisbury and Avebury would be an easy day's driving loop from Bath.

But, no doing that by public transport isn't feasible. You could hire a driver/guide . . .

What do you want to see in Bath? There are several neat things as well as the sweet Regency-period town itself. By public transit it would be hard to see both Bath and Stonehenge in the same day - Stonehenge is several miles out of Salisbury by bus and back.

There are probably bus tours that do all three but via public transit not practical.

They are doing Salisbury and Stonehenge the same day and are asking if Avebury is possible. Presumably they will 'do' Bath a different day of the weekend.


But Mad Max does do one tour year round starting from Bath that includes Stonehenge and Avebury plus a dip into the Cotswolds. Without a car this would be about your only option.

Right janis - I read this which says these 3 in a day and that would be possible only by car or tour.

I guess they could do Stonehenge, Salisbury - take a cab to Avebury then bus to train and end up in Bath?

There is also a bus only option - bus to Devizes and then bus to Avebury.
I think it takes about the same time as the train/bus option. It takes about 90 minutes mind!

If you want to do all three in a day hire a car, it will be quicker, and possibly cheaper.

As posed in the title: YES. Hourly trains from Bath to Swindon connect with hourly buses to Avebury. Point to point total: abouit 90 mins.

I enjoyed Avebury so so much - can't say more than Stonehenge from a monumental/famous point of view but at Avebury -last time I was there (which seems like generations ago so may have changed!) we could wander willy-nilly right up to the stones - sheep were brazing between them -there are so many stones- much more diminutive than Stonehenge but there was hardly anyone else there -it seemed rather surreal.

Other than the snarkiness, I appreciate the help. I wasn't trying to confuse anyone; the 3 that I was referring to seeing in one day would be: Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Avebury. It seems as though it' s not easily done though so I think we'll just stick with Salisbury and Stonehenge this trip. There's never enough time to see everything! We will already be staying in Bath so will have time for seeing the sights there. If we find that we have more time, then we'll venture to Avebury. Thank you again.

I totally agree. But when I first lived in the area bit locations where free and open to visit. So I could easy touch the Stonehenge stones. Still Avebury and some other sites near by are the most "magical".
Maybe the 1950s restoration took away the atmosphere of stone hedge?
