Thanks everyone for your feedback!

To do what we do we have to plan accordingly. The concern from spouse is the planning and packing. We have to pick up our luggage in Munich, during our stopover. So, we would need to avoid baggage pickup by switching to smaller check-in luggages. In order to make it out quickly, we will have to buy new luggage to bring smaller bags on bard. Hence, we need to switch packing strategy (move from a large luggage to a smaller luggage we can check in). This is where I'm getting some resistance. Spouse doesn't think it's possible to reduce the packed items

I wouldn't buy new luggage for the possibility of seeing the Glockenschpiel. I am a sucker for that sort of thing and I still don't think it is worth all that.

OK, so your spouse finally agrees and you buy new carry-on luggage and you are able to pack everything you need. I guess you'll plan to carry/roll that carry-on bag all over down-town Munich? How long until you fly out? For me, the issue wouldn't be the rush to get downtown; it would be dealing with that piece of luggage all day. But if that's what works for you, go for it.

Are you glued at the hip? Hubby can relax at the terminal while you enjoy your adventure. You don't always need to be "two-by-two."

There is no relaxing while waiting for your spouse to get back to the terminal on an international flight . . .

I am totally with catcrazyaf. If you want to see the Glockenspiel, see the Glockenspiel. If your spouse wants to stay at the airport and relax with a book and a cup of coffee he/she can do so and watch the bags. I can see myself being either one of you depending on the day.

This is such a no brainer; I cannot even fathom why a grown up woman is asking strangers if she should get on a train with plenty time and go see a world class sight....:-? are you around Munich on a monthly basis? My guess is no; well, there is your answer.

I haven't been to Munich, but if I understand this correctly, you have one day in Munich. You intend to go downtown, anyway. The only issue is that you want to rush (which involves not checking bags and buying new suitcases) to get someplace by noon and your spouse doesn't want to go to any special efforts and wants to not worry about rushing and just getting there when you do.

I agree with your spouse, but I've never been that big on tourist attractions like that. All the folks who kill themselves to go see the Eiffel Tower for an hour, for example, are a mystery to me as I would never do such a thing. I just don't think the most important things in a city or anywhere are typical tourist attractions like a tower or a chiming clock or whatever.

Can't you just compromise and do things normally and if you get there in time, fine, if not, no harm done. You can be prepared with having the right money for the train and knowing what to do, but forget the rushing and special packing methods and buying luggage. Because I think I would have been able to make that schedule in virtually every city I've ever landed in Europe, even with checked bags (getting through passport control and picking up luggage in one hour total). I know it doesn't take me longer than an hour to do that in the vast majority of the time, in any case. Usually each may take a half hour, and luggage coming out often doesn't take that long.

I just wanted to update everyone on this.

We did decide to wing it during our layover, and rush to Marienplatz! It was sooo easy to take the train from the airport. The airport is very nice. Everything was efficient from buying the ticket, to finding the train, to getting out!

Our flight arrives in Munich at 9:55am and we were striving to arrive in 2 hours (by 12pm) to see the Glockenspiel show. We got there SUPER early and made it by 11am!

It was nice, and I'm glad we decided to see it.

I agree with him because: men. ;-)

But it's probably doable if the center of town is just 40 min by train, and the German trains are not Amtrak - they're actually reliable.
