Heading to Sorrento next week for five nights. My search on restaurants came up empty. Can anyone recommend some good restaurants in Sorrento? We are staying at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano. We enjoy lively, moderately priced restaurants with good house wine and interesting atmosphere.

We have always had good food and service.

Last time it was my wifes birthday and instead of desert, a birthday cake came out along with all the waiters singing 'Happy Birthday' (I think it was happy birthday, but in Italian).

In peak season it is always very busy and best to book ahead to good a good table on the terrace.

Luna for pizza, and Luna Due for a wonderful, moderately priced meal. Both are in the old town, which is about five minutes from the Tramontano.

By the way, we stayed at the Tramontano last year, so if you have any questions about it, just post again! We thought it was an excellent location, very central to town and to the marina.

We are looking forward to staying at Tramontano - my only concern is that it appears that not all sea view rooms have terraces or balconies. We have made our request and will have to hope for the best. What did you think of the hotel? I don't have any specific questions but if you can think of anything that might be helpful please pass it along. Thanks.

You're right. Some of the sea view rooms don't have terraces. We had two rooms on the 4th floor, as I remember, and both of those had medium-enormous terraces with sweeping views of the Bay of Naples. I e-mailed the hotel a couple times before our arrival, begging for rooms with a terrace, and I think just to get rid me of me, they finally gave in and confirmed it!

As I posted earlier, we thought the location of the hotel was wonderful. The rooms were nothing special, but the beds were comfortable, and the AC was excellent. I'm sure you already know that the hotel has a small pool. If you plan on sitting at the pool, get out there no later than 9:30 AM, and "reserve" your seats with a few magazines or books. We found this was the only way to do it.

There's a strip of sand, AKA a beach (??) which is below the hotel. You go through a long tunnel connected to the hotel grounds to get there. The beach was wall-wall bodies when we were there, so we usually opted to swim at the pool instead.

Make sure to visit an area of Sorrento that's called, I think, the "Old Marina". As you go out of the hotel, take a right, go past the Hotel Bellevue Syrene about three or four blocks, and you will see a stone staircase leading down to the water on the right. We had drinks at one of the small bars along the water, and it was a lot of fun. Also watched artists setting up for the day to paint the beautiful scenery.

If your plans include a visit to Positano ( and they should!!) look into taking the boat from Sorrento. It's only about a 45 minute ride, and a great way to see the coast without sitting in traffic! I don't know what the schedule is in the Fall, so you'll have to check the service availability at the hotel or at the main marina.

I have been bugging the Tramontano for a room with a balcony or terrace and just received an email from them this morning confirming a sea view room with a balcony. Thanks for all the detailed information. The Old Marina area looks interesting.
